In real life, Prototaxites was a type of giant mushroom that covered the earth 400 million years ago. We've found all these fossils and they're quite the mystery!

This is also an opportunity to talk about my encounter writing philosophy. Here in the Eternal Depths I try to write each potential encounter in a way that players can solve peacefully or not so peacefully. Not every monster goes straight to murder. Prototaxites is an encounter that you probably want to treat nicely. He's about as strong as a giant! However, you can always just, run away from him. He's only got a MV of 10'.
