War hounds would protect and fight over farm hounds in order to nourish their own magical growth and prevent burn out. In the previous war, the hounds would search for captives in order to add to their personal herds.
Ultimately, this only slows the degradation. They'll still regularly need 'injections' from the Prisoner, but it will help.
