Like when captain Volas of the Black Dragons ( a Salamander successor chapter) notes seeing two humans running away to safety holding hands and remarking that those small gestures of love are what he was made to protect.

This convinced me to pick up the Cain book I bought the same time I got Horus Rising. And it's fun! All the fun I wasn't having trying to slog through. Mechanicum. Everything he does manages to work on his favor somehow, even if it is a slight from another inquisitor. That'd be where he gets the "failing forward" shtick. Keep in mind too that all of these stories are written by someone who loved/cared about him, of course they will make it as flattering as it can be. I would love to see a book about Cain by anyone but his mistress/not mistress.

She’s one of the more memorable side characters in the Novels and fits Amberley‘s habit of writing bad about other female characters in Cain‘s memoirs considering she’s described to have the face of a horse and it can be argued how true that statement is.

2024-02-22 17:32:35 +0000 UTCYes and no, the blank part may increase the notice of lack of hygiene, but his is described as have unkempt facial hair with food and other stuff stick on it, a bad case of halitosis or bad breath, and his uniform is usually has food stains on it. Also in one short story on Jurgen in the Cain series, Jurgen mention he doesn't really care for society norm and dislike talk to people, so the bad hygiene could be his way of avoid a conversation.

2024-02-22 17:19:55 +0000 UTCI'm a bit confused on how people see Cain as an idiot or/and exteremly lucky. In most of his book, he stacks the deck in his favor. He make sure that from the grunts to high command respect or like to the point where he know they won't shoot him in the back or/and will do the best to keep him alive, beside the mostly suicidal mission he usually finds him self in, he made it to retirement after fighting all the major enemies of the imperium a one point or time. Not only that but Cain also has a really good intuition that I feel is mostly ignored, his able to link thing quicker than most people, minus some of inquisition agents he works with in his stories. His first assignment as a commissar was his doing, he just seduce the right amdin( who liked men in uniform) to get a nice safe rear echelon, where he was far from the front lines. Is he self serving, yes, is he good at his job, yes, so to call him guy whose an idiot that fall foward is an understament to who he is.

The best part about it is that he's been listed as KIA so many times and returned "triumphant", that there is a standing order to have him listed as being active and alive, even after the aforementioned burial, which Vail finds really funny.

2024-02-22 10:31:30 +0000 UTCI thinks its always important to point out that Cain is very competent and for all the luck he has, he also gets unlucky alot. I think you can make the case that Cain is the best Comissar, over even Yarrick and Gaunt. The books are written from Cains perspektive, and he has massive imposter syndrom, which often leads to people believing what he says over seeing what he does. He claimes to always want to be as far away from the fighting as possible, yet he always reasons himself into going on the most dangerous missions anyway. I think the day he met Jörgen was the only time he allowed his fear to take control. Fate punished him, by naming him hero of the imperium, and he spend the rest of his life having to live up to that title. And he did.

BECAUSE YEAH On a more serious note; the Cain books are what got me *into* Warhammer instead of just absently absorbing stuff through osmosis from people in my life. He's so clever and skilled but still so *painfully* human, which is a nice change to all the other books/characters we follow in Warhammer, and makes it such a fun read. Caiaphas is the 40k rep of imposter syndrome and screaming incoherently in your head while still smiling at the crowd! I only wish he'd been around to meet one of the Primarchs or hear that they were back, his reaction would have been *hilarious*, especially with how he sees the Emperor in his internal monologues.
