EP. 146 | The Litanies of the Guard
Added 2024-08-15 00:53:16 +0000 UTC
Today we continue exploring the uplifting handbook by talking about the uplifting part of the handbook. The prayers and litanies that the guardsman will turn to in moments of happiness, strife and even in their last moments.

Mechanical devices are mostly about movement. The "Gate flipping" does not involve movement of anything other than electrons, IT is not mechanical. Mechanical may be keyboard, cooling Systems, disk tray.
Electric is of course, when it uses electricity in any form. Electric engine is both mechanical and electric. And electronic, I think it is if it uses semiconductors (diodes and transistors).

It was a ship from WW1 that was MADE of concrete. It was just a towable barge effectively that they were originally going to strap a load of guns to drop it off near a beachhead and it could shell in land and repel enemy fleets. When the US switched to a carrier based naval fleet they scrapped the idea and instead turned them into floating ice cream factories. We had 2 of em and as we did the island hopping IN WW2 we just kept following the marine deployments with them. Germans got into an artillery battle with the US army in WW2 where they just kept chucking shells back and forth the Germans thought we had 2-3 times the amount of guns they did because we could just keep bombarding them all day and night long meanwhile they had to pause to maintain supply of rounds and repair/replace gun barrels on their howitzers. We just kept firing and shaping out barrels on rotation without pausing the battery.

Considering the jokes about the primer being toilet paper, you could also use it in a Guardsmen TV show as when things are going good they reference the text sarcastically/amusedly, but when push comes to shove they pray fervently.

Okay, pedantic moment for the whole quartz movement in watches. They work because of an electrical impulse that is predictable and consistent to keep time. In the mechanical movements that battery is a spring governed by the gear ratios. So, yeah, totally agree on the whole square rectangle things.

Canadian here:
Canadian Thanksgiving is in October because it's basically the end of the harvest season. And makes the most sense up here in the ice.
And American Thanksgiving is in November because congress asked G.Washingmachine in 1789 to name a day of "Publik Thanksgivin" and he named Thursday November 26.
The date flopped around a bunch until 1863 when Lincoln declared it would be only the last Thursday of November.
And then many years later in 1939 Roosevelt changed it to the second last Thursday in November to make sure the Christmas shopping season wasn't messed up so the economy could get a boost. Rather insteresting history about dates all around.

As an Australian, I am baffled at how badly we fucked up. Not just learning that Los Angeles said no to breakdown for the next Olympic saddens me is rumours coming out that the breakdancing trials were only held three months out from the Olympics, so such short notice on top of you had to sign up Three different applications all online all in different places and also have a valid passport in such a short amount of time. It’s just stupid and rude. There are a lot of break dances complaining about it, just simply not knowing it was on. There’s footage online of far better breakdancers doing so much better than this poor woman in the trials. What baffles me even further is how no one walked up to her and said before you go on stage, what’s your routine If I was a coach and she showed me that I would’ve said leg, injury, and can’t perform. I don’t know how it happened. I am just baffled, not disappointed, not angry, just confused.

It's funny , in Star Trek there are a group of shrewd businessmen whose entire religion is about acquisitions. So they have a series of rules that they're supposed to live by. There is no set list. They will just make up a new role whenever they need for the plot. Feels a lot like the codex

The problem with trying to print a lore accurate Codex Astartes is that it would be the Encyclopedia Britannica but focused instead on war. You'd have to include everything from Sun Tzu's Art of War, to Clauswictz's On War to Machiavelli's The Prince to whatever tracts have been written about physical fitness. It would make the Horus Heresy Series pale in comparison in number of books AND you would have to go all out with things like embossing the covers and probably even gold filigree. The books would be so expensive almost no one would be able to buy them.+

Fun fact while we are not entirely sure if the Roman feast or Christmas (the celebration) was on December 25th first. We do know that early Christian historians had put Christ's birth on December 25th approximately 50 before we have evidence of the Roman feast being celebrated on December 25th.

The Codex Astartes would obviously be hard to print in its enrirety, but I am going to make a case for defictiomalizing the Letitio Divinicus, because defictionalizing religous literature has been done before. Specifically, in both versions of the Vampire rpg - Vampire the Masquerade had the Book of Nod, the Vampire bible supposedly written by Caine himself (yes, the biblical one, also the first vampire in this universe), along with the Erciyes Fragments (apocrypha to the Book of Nod) and the Revelations of the Dark Mother (the holy book of another vampire religion focusing on Lilith). Meanwhile, Vampire the Requiem has the Testament of Longinus (written by the vampiric "anti-messiah" of the same name) and Rites of the Dragon (written by Dracula). All of these books were defictionalized, and they make for amazing lore deep dives, or props for that matter.

There was also weapons development, on the fly to make a new bunker buster..... Out of decommissioned Howitzer barrels. It's a pretty cool story you should look into it

When I was a tech priest in the navy, the logistics the navy can will and even accidentally pulls off for all of the big grey floaty things on the sea terrified me.

Hey again I ask, if you are horus at the start of the heresy and chaos will 100% corrupt any 5 of your brothers and no more which 5 do you draft to defeat the emperor? ( I pick guiliman, russ, magnus, khan, and perturabo

I would like to see a Space Marine episode. Not one on a specific chapter/legion/Marine, but on them in general. What makes them, them, in contrast to the Guard, Costodes, or other special forces of the Imperium.

Could the prayer also be there so that there are written prayers for guardsmen, so they know exactly where and how to reach so they don't accidentally reach out and touch faith in chaos.

Apon further reading, there are two notable holiday's. Sanguinala, sanguinis's sacrifice, it's a reference to saternallia. Not much else is said, some said it's like x-mas or Easter, but it sounds more somber. The other is the feast of the emperor's ascension. It's when he displayed the golden throne and first sat on it (something he probably regrets by now) it's definitely treated like 4th of July and Thanksgiving for a week. And most likely only those who can afford it.

The other issue with a print of the Codex Astartes is that it is said to be entire libraries in length. A sort of collection of passages from it would be cool though.

Lysander it was Ice Cream Ships in world war 2. It was a Japanese commander who read the intercepted newspaper from a GI it said the United States have built way too many concrete ships needed so they converted two or three of them into ice cream making ships which the Japanese commander was just utterly horrified at the idea that oh my God, I’m eating rice and meat and living off the land and they have literal ice cream in this tropical hell.

Listening to this episode the first thing that comes to mind then they talk about the prayers to the Emperor is that video of the Gaurdsman who runs out of ammo and starts a prayer when he hears the tyranids coming up to him and the Space Marine shows up and takes him under his wing. I can’t remember what it’s from but I feel like it’s a good example of a guardsman falling back to the prayers in the handbook

I'm pretty sure Koda is spot on with the holiday, one of the big ones is "the day the angel fell" sanguinis dying. Astardes anonymous talked about it in one of their shorts. I think it's the sanguinala. idk.
