2025-03-07 02:43:01 +0000 UTC"Stem major can't handle math". I have a theory. There are hardcore mathematicians and there are logicians. The logician can see the pattern in problems and solve them through logic, reason and the tools they have acquired, but they struggle somewhat when the problems get too abstract. They can on the other hand reason through some quite complex real life problems. The hardcore mathematicians sees the matrix and can actually understand the pure abstract problems. It was a thing I noticed when participating in what is effectively the Danish math championship for high school students. I was in top 20, but I could see there was a difference between the top 5 and the rest of us, in how we looked at the problems and solutions. There was one where I had the right answer, but it was more reasoning than applying the right tools.

You actually had to enter your SSN to prove you were an American citizen in order to play it, and some of the mechanics in it were insane. They also had recruiters watching you play, as my friend found out when his squad fragged him after he executed a flanking maneuver and took out some guys behind a wall. They started throwing grenades at him and he was throwing them back and spamming “friendly” on the radio. After one blew up in his hand he started to go off on them in chat when all of the sudden he was in a white void with an officer being told to calm down. Trippy stuff even decades later.

Most math problems can be decomposed into 3 basic parts, gathering data to understand what the question is, then it's understanding the method you need to solve the problem and finally the computation of the method. Find out which part you suck at and then practice. Most people suck at understanding what the method is trying to do (integration, differentiation, pdes, etc) and therefore struggle to apply the right method to the data gathered. And I'm saying this as someone who used to "suck at math". I know have a Masters degree in electronics and another in quantitative finance and have been working as a quant for 20 years.

2024-09-06 11:35:36 +0000 UTCRegarding the comments about the sisters game and the cs go Idle animation, Boltgun, the classic doom style game, has a button where the player character just starts screaming taunts and litanies at the chaos forces you're fighting, and when you go idle you start reading the codex astarties in classic ultramarine fashion. Pressing that taunt button and hearing "YOU ARE AN ABOMINATION TO BE EXPUNGED, DIE HERETIC" Is just a shot of pure serotonin P.s. Get some throne damned sleep, a healthy Isyander is a good Isyander

The new path of it shoots off in a tangent line because it is a line that only touches the curve once at least for a little bit. Because the point of a tangent line is that it's basically if the motion continued forever, what would happen? What would be its trajectory And using that moment where they stopped the tractor Cannon would be a useful insight to get at the spirit of what a tangent is. Also, don't worry about my opinion too much. I'm a crazy math person. You don't have to worry about me. For ideas look up tangent of golden spiral
