From the networked social bonds of Desoleum to the pollution and destruction of Helsreach, we'll talk about these specific cities' quirks and features to get an idea of how Hive Cities as a whole function.

2024-12-16 20:46:06 +0000 UTCThat's just an advanced lod system tbh I'd say Minecraft does this best especially if you install sodium, which can change chunks to be 16x16x16 instead of 16x16x383 and it also has a chunk unloader installed so you could walk into the next chunk and the previous will be dumped into memory and then unloaded so you only render the current chunk.

Example: say you were sanding next to a rock and you start to move away from it. As you move away from it the engine will lower the polygon count on that rock the further you get away from it. The opposite is also true as you move towards it. Fairly simplified from my understanding of the system but it's so cool

If anyone is interested in seeing a Hive City represented as a setting, you should look up the Three Black Halflings podcast and their series "City of the Black Rose". It is self described as a "Gothic Horror series with strong Noir elements" and the setting is the City-State of Mavros: The City of The Black Rose. It is a city with three layers to it, all built on top of each other, and reminded me of a Hive City when I first listened to it described on the podcast. If you like D&D and want some magical steampunk gothic horror, please give it a try, I highly recommend it!
