March 2024 - Playtests Reviews

In this post, I write a big review about the first playtests we did during the month of March 2024. As always, English is not my native langage so be benevolent regarding synthaxis. I try my best to be clear :)

What we did:

- We were four players: one cis guy, two trans girls and one cis girl. Every player had a different experience of MtG: one beginner/casual player, an old legacy player and two EDH players.

- The box we drafted is composed of four prints of each common card, two prints of each uncommon card, and one print of each rare & mythic cards. A booster pack is created with 10 randomly picked common cards, 4 uncommon cards and 1 rare or mythic card (1 mythic for 4 booster pack).

- We drafted 5 booster packs.

- We started playing 1v1 best-of-3 : each player played against each other player.

- We finally played two multiplayer games of 1v1v1v1 (free for all).

Overall aspect:

- The set works really well and is well balanced.

- Drafting the set and discovering art and effects with other players was really fun. Everyone was talking about art and Magic References while drafting. It helped a lot getting in the mood.

- About the mood: everyone was amused and had a really fun time during the whole night. No discomfort pointed out!

- It appears that the set is more oriented on fun that on sexual tension.

- The format is really quick. The set is heavilly aggressive, maybe too much. I write on this point below.

- The set works better in multiplayer: games are longer and more fun. I write on this point below too.

- Unless you are working yourself for it, you likely won’t end being naked during a round of play. And that was fine.

Fun cards people enjoyed:

- Delicious Mind, Delicious Body (#099): a simple common that forces your opponents to strip if they want to keep their cards. The cards works well because it gives two consecutive choices. Most of time, people will strip their hat if they want to keep their clothes on. Having two strips on one card forces a piece of clothing to be removed if the player wants to keep their two cards.

- Excited Devil (#139): Forcing your opponent to strip each turn early game works really well. Effects that ask for a strip each turn were well received, and this card does exactly this. The card is well balanced. The devil’s controller is always pleased by playing the card.

- Itinerant Merchant (#185): As Excited Devil does, this Merchant offers people to strip each turn and is well received for this. Stripping in exchange of a card and a treasure is really flavorfull, and the whole table was always happy to see him, and stripped with pleasure.

- Lightning Drips (#154): This card can fix the whole attention easilly! Because of someone named « underwear » and that 2 damage each turn escaladed quickly, the multiplayer game quickly became a rush to genitals-nudity; no matter the costs. The game came to a point where every player still had their shirt, hat and socks, but no underwears. That situation was really goofy and everyone laughed a lot. Forcing people to strip specific piece of clothing is some of the aspects that made the games really fun, and Lightning Drips is one of the cards that does it the best.

Regarding these playtests, I’ll work on these points for the next updates:

- Strip cost will be a bit increased for some cards. In order to be funnier, I’ll try to push cards to either strip twice in one effect, or strip regulary.

- Regarding that, dare will be buffed. Currently, stripping is never a real problem. If the dare is too good, people can easily smash it by removing their hat. Some creatures will get more evasion, additional dare, or better dares.

- Creatures will be less aggressive in order to get longer games (+2 or 3 turns is intended).
