Reacting to Interview with the Vampire S1:E6 - "Like Angels Put in Hell By God"

Interesting that you are only focusing on Lestat’s manipulation and completely ignoring Claudia’s blatant manipulation of Louis. She uses love while Lestat uses violence. I think it’s questionable which is worse. And honestly, Claudia is just as violent and psycho as Lestat, she just isn’t violent to Louis. Why is it that you apply human morality to the non-human creatures?

It's soooo terrifyingly funny. It's camp and unusual and sadistic just like our mans lestat is 😆

WHAT OMGGG

I totally agree about Claudia leaving. Lestat would’ve been okay with not having Claudia around if he thought Louis could be okay without her. I think that’s one of Louis’ biggest character flaws atm. He can’t live without both. Which makes their situation unbearable when they can’t stand each other.

The racial allegories and undertones to all their interactions are very intentional and I love it because making Louis and Claudia black in the show was not some thoughtless random decision. They thought this through and made significant changes to the overall story. I loooove how this show reminds me the viewer that the present storyline is just as important and interesting. Y'all are gonna love where this all goes lol Rashid is very suspicious! I feel like its way too easily glossed over that Louis is depressed and suicidal asf 😭 Glad you noticed it, but I think that also plays a part in Lestat not allowing Claudia to leave. It doesn't make it right and it's still selfish because Lestat is prioritizing his and Louis' happiness over Claudia's, but I think Lestat is very aware that for one his relationship with Louis is very fragile, but also Louis NEEDS Claudia around or else he'll fully slip away and Lestat cannot have that. But I agree that there could be an element of anger at Claudia abandoning him as well. I don't think this would be considered a spoiler because its yet to be said explicitly, but its definitely intentionally implied that Daniel is queer in some way. The timeline being hard to pin down is a mixture of the show being all dramatic and weaving the placement of the years in quick dialogue and through the settings and the show depicting how easily time passes for vampires. As another comment said, we are in 1939 in this episode. To help with some significant timestamps: 1910 - First episode, Lestat turns Louis 1917 - Claudia's turned and joins the family 1923 - Claudia runs away 1930 - The episode 5 fight where Lestat drops Louis Regarding Claudia's accent, I'm from the south and I definitely notice her accent being a lil wonky, but I don't mind it because I think her acting and the shows writing as a whole makes up for it. Nitpicks are a sign of a good show imo! Means we're being so well fed we can afford to be hypercritical lol

Wow! Brilliant! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

In terms of the time passing you have to pay very close attention to the dialogue because the time jumps are written into their conversations. It cant be very confusing. The end this episode they are in late 1939. Poland was invaded in September of 1939.

K

Bradley clocking the roots of black history written into their relationship dynamic. The show is written levels I've never seen.

K

20 minutes of post show analysis is Homelander level. I need y'all to hustle and get the young Daniel episode in season 2. It's one of the best of the series.

I think this episode is super interesting for the way it brings together the psychology of the characters that has been built up over time. I don't think, for example, it is losing the chess game that infuriates Lestat, it is that the game is left unfinished. Lestat seems to approach unpleasant experiences as something to move on from as quickly as possible, without thought. The opposite of Louis, who dwells on everything forever. That shows up a number of times throughout the series, e.g., when Louis struggles not to eat his nephew and Lestat's solution is a holiday or the opera. By refusing to finish the game Claudia forecloses the possibility of Lestat's moving on from the loss. It demonstrates her very thorough understanding of Lestat's psychology. And, in the same scene, she also demonstrates that she doesn't really understand Louis, because she says he will enjoy killing Lestat and, as much Louis may or may not want Lestat gone or dead, I don't think anybody paying attention to Louis would ever come to the conclusion that he would enjoy the attempt. She has a habit of overestimating how similar she and Louis are, both in general and in relation to Lestat. I think we also see some of Daniel exposed here. He is spikier in the start of this episode than usual, because of the medication. That would be understandable in itself but I also think it shows some worry on his part, a fear of a loss of control of the situation he is (which he tries to re-assert by mocking the doctor) and maybe a greater fear of mortality than he will admit to.

I always laugh at Lestat with the conductor's head so I appreciated that Bradley did too! I love this episode so much because it covers SO much narrative ground (Louis's recovery at the beginning, Lestat returning home, the situation curdling, them being ready to take out Lestat by the end, plus Daniel's dream) without feeling like the pacing is off and I find it to be such a feat of writing every time

Colleen

Absolutely loved the rant at the end because I can tell you guys love the show just as much as me. Spoiler free but I’m so excited to watch season two with you both because of all the things you’re theorizing. It’s going to be so fun, and I get to rewatch everything waiting for season 3.

louis accent is supposed to be different tho, its intentional and changes over time because of where hes at and who hes around. like in dubai his nola accent is gone

Lestat wouldn't let Claudia leave because he knew Louis really didn't want her to go. Claudia and Lestat don't get along because they are too much alike. They both want Louis all to themselves and don't like sharing Louis. As Louis says Lestat is "all kinds of fucked up". He told the truth about his maker Magnus. He also told the truth about the abuse he suffered from his father and brothers ( back at the dinner with Louis family in an earlier episode). Claudia was abused by Bruce for several years which should have bonded her and Lestat. Vampires really need to go see a vamp psychologist to learn how to deal with the trauma of being a vampire.

1. love a good gab i could care less how long you two discuss things as long as you discuss things love it 2. never noticed claudia's accent before and it is a bit haughty but so is louis' if you compare his human accent to how he speaks now as a vamp so idk 3. 1937 louis and lestat make up over song and germany invades poland 2 ish years later i think the show is very masterful in drawing historical contextual clues but does take some observing and details and rewatching

Miki

claudia and lestat having a diva-off is my favorite thing

Man I don’t even like Claudia, but it’s harder for me to watch what Lestat does to Claudia this episode than it was watching the drop last episode. To me, he's far more deliberately transgressive and manipulative here, against a weaker target too. That said, yes, he’s still motherfucking hilarious when he’s queening out, right at the start. "You left without saying goodbye," sassy hip cock, "again!" sassy head tilt. The physicality both main actors bring to the role is impressive, but it's the lack of subtlety with Lestat that cracks me up. Even though most of the episode is full of hostility, there are beautiful parts to it: the bit when Lestat tells them about his turning, and Louis is clearly so moved by Lestat’s vulnerability … Jacob is distractingly beautiful with his eyes shining! Speaking of beautiful; Sam Reid’s slutty little wasp waist and his beatific heaving gaze when Louis breaks into Antoinette’s is breathtaking! Anyway, I love watching especially when y’all start to laugh at Lestat just before he starts being atrocious then have to reign it back in (this is admittedly more Bradley!). I’m so glad y’all picked this! And that you like it too; not just selfishly for me to see fresh reactions from cute boys! ETA: there's going be fighting words on YT over y'all calling the song silly! Fankids love that song! I don't like Sam's voice as much in it, when it's throaty like Cher or Shakira ... but he does have a fantastic baritone. For his equally capable--smoother toned-- tenor from him you can see him singing "I Want You" (Girl From the North Country) here https://youtu.be/x1dNTM6uUSw?si=-vH2dpME1C41xhMU.

not a spoiler just want to clear this up for you guys! in the dream at the end louis says “is that okay with you?” to rashid after daniel asks to interview him/come over to his room. so (in daniel’s dream) rashid was at the bar with louis and they seemed to know each other.

ezra

This ep really shows why they have been dubbed The Unholy Family 🧛🏻‍♀️ Btw, I believe the language Daniel said Rashid was talking was kazakh but I could be remembering wrong In terms of the time, it was briefly mentioned that Louis got the song from Lestat in 1937, and Germany invaded Poland in 1939, but yeah sometimes time goes quite fast in Iwtv, but I also do feel like thats very “vampire-like”. That sometimes 5-7 years have gone by like its nothing, because for them it is, but it does takes some getting used to as a viewer Rambling over haha 🤗
