I think the worst is true. That they amplify the most extreme fringes from.both sides, the most outrageous, rage baiting, profane type of content because that's what generates retention.

2024-08-08 22:04:10 +0000 UTCThe one thing that the left and the right have in common is they both say big tech is doing more to help the other side. It's hard to deny that google and facebook have stirred up some controversy with their fact checking and search results for recent events.. it would be odd timing for an attack from the left. The ruling is probably the delayed result of a court case that was already in motion, these things can take years after all. The real test is if the left calls off its dogs -- that's what I'll be watching for.

2024-08-08 13:36:06 +0000 UTCIt probably works in reverse - if the government threatens breakups, then the big tech can say they'll campaign against them in the next election. With their power over social media, search, and all digital content, this is a soft power that could blackmail any administration in docile submission. It's the election season in the US and I think Google is mega pissed off at Democrats who are behind these initiatives and I think all of the big tech will have stronger motivation now to collude against them. Unless they manage to tame the Dems' attempts to crack down on the big tech. Super interesting convo!

2024-08-08 11:57:17 +0000 UTCThe government wont break up Google or big tech in general, they will use the threat of a breakup as leverage to make tech companies do their bidding, especially around privacy, narrative, and censorship. This is straight out of their 2016 playbook: Elizabeth Warren was very keen to break up big tech companies until they capitulated. Is it a coincidence that she sought to "rein in" the dominant players in the information space during an election year? Big Tech is the 4th branch of Government.
