Added 2024-09-24 17:17:29 +0000 UTCI have not made a big deal of it yet, but the International Astronomical Union (IAU) have named an asteroid after me! Behold minor planet 314159 is now called "Mattparker".
https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/sbdb_lookup.html#/?sstr=314159
I'm very excited and am filming a video all about it. But we have no visuals of Mattparker. It appears as a single pixel in observations like this:

So I'd love some "artist's impressions" of what Mattparker might look like. 3D renders, 2D sketches, elaborate watercolours - anything would be great! Send it over to matt+mattparker@standupmaths.com before we film on Monday 30 September.
As far as we know, Mattparker is a S class asteroid about 800m in diameter, but even that is speculative. Up until now it has been an insignificant member of the main asteroid belt, so we don't have a lot of observations of it.

I did speak to a light-curve expert who ran the numbers on what little data we have thus far, and this plot (with massive error bars) indicates Mattparker might have a rotation of about 100 hours and be slightly elliptical shaped. But until we get more observations, we really don't know much for sure.
All we do know for sure is that as soon as we have the technology to visit: you're all invited.

The pi one (pi being half a circle) was the half-ass-teroid The tau (two-pi) one will be the Ass-tau-roid.

2024-10-26 16:50:58 +0000 UTCWoohoo! We're in! You know, Ally's sketch as a monotile hat was my favorite but there were a lot of close runners up. Brent Bartlett if you're here, well done on describing the surface, that was awesome. Jamie Nemeth that was a fantastic idea. Ronald Lopez are you here? You're design is beautiful. Does anyone know what that chart is a reference to I swear I recognize it but I can't place it.

2024-10-25 17:44:41 +0000 UTCI wonder if they will name 628319 as stevemould! :D

2024-10-24 14:58:36 +0000 UTCPlease someone submit something like the moon from The Little Prince but with a parker square on it. :D I would but my artistic skills are why I took up mathematics. :D

2024-10-24 14:55:01 +0000 UTCSubmitted my art last night, might not have made the cut. Tried with AI and failed ... how can it not make a klein bottle shaped asteroid!!! Got a few more weeks yet before AI can replace my pencil and ink!

2024-09-27 20:37:28 +0000 UTCI emailed some fan art in that I made in 15 minutes that had a parker square on it

2024-09-25 15:21:26 +0000 UTCIt sure is a 'bright star' in a mathematical wasteland.

2024-09-25 12:33:11 +0000 UTCWonder whether it has the parker square engraved on it

2024-09-25 10:26:12 +0000 UTCI feel it should have been 314158, to be a proper "Parker" number

2024-09-25 07:39:47 +0000 UTCCongratulations! (And the number is not a coincidence)

2024-09-25 07:33:11 +0000 UTC314159?! Not 628319? That's not an asteroid, that's a hemiroid, and I'm not sure he'll be allowed to show fan art of it.

2024-09-25 07:09:18 +0000 UTCIt’s so perfect

2024-09-25 04:14:09 +0000 UTCThey missed an opportunity to name 314158 or 314160 the Parker-Stroid.

2024-09-24 20:50:03 +0000 UTCI'm no artist so no graphics from me, but after reading "single pixel" I imagined a Minecraft-style cuboidal asteroid.

2024-09-24 19:09:14 +0000 UTCJust how did you get 314159 😄 I made an "AI's impression": https://imgur.com/m7v6zW4

2024-09-24 18:53:14 +0000 UTCIf I don't see a Matt's head shaped asteroid art I will be very disappointed.

2024-09-24 18:28:56 +0000 UTCSort of the Pluto of asteroids. (Matt’s already suggested the motto for it: “we really don't know much for sure.”)
Brent Bartlett
2024-09-24 18:28:48 +0000 UTCYes, and my bet is 314159 Mattparker will be as "not _really_ an asteroid... not a proper one, at least, but IT GAVE IT A GO AND THAT'S WHAT MATTERS" in the fullness of time.
