Limited Edition Art Print 2021/22

Dear Patrons,

Thank you for your support! Each year we select one artwork from a FAA Collective artist and produce a limited edition art print that is exclusive to our Art Collector tier subscribers on Patreon.

As this year’s prints are arriving at their homes, we would like to share with you some interesting facts about the drawing that inspired them, a reproduction of The Girl with the Black Fur by Marco Franco.

Marco graduated from The Florence Academy of Art’s Painting Program in 2019 and now, as a Principal Instructor, he passes along his experience in drawing and painting to students in the FAA Intensive Drawing and Intermediate Programs.

This print is part of a limited edition of 100, printed in Florence, and created using the highest quality materials and digital techniques in order to reproduce as closely as possible the original master work.

Drawn in charcoal and white chalk on light gray Canson paper, Marco says, “Charcoal is the ideal medium for producing sketches of the figure from life”, and uses drawing studies to create the final composition for his paintings.

He produced this work as a preparatory drawing for the painting by the same name.

We asked Marco to tell us what he thinks of the print and speak on the original artwork:

"The print is of fantastic quality, with a faithful rendering of values compared to the original charcoal drawing! In my drawing I played with the composition of the shapes: the fur’s large dark mass contrasts with the light value I gave my subject; the dark fur accentuates the light areas of skin, a luminous triangle defined by the torso and the side of the model's face placed towards the light, whose overall values are the same. The triangle is a simple but effective shape, both visually and compositionally. This kind of geometric abstraction of the shapes found in the composition helps create a visual unity of the image that allows the viewer to perceive all its parts simultaneously."

A transfer drawing is a preparatory drawing that will be transferred onto the canvas. As Marco explains:

“In my work, the transfer has a dual function: on the one hand it allows me to manage paint application with more accuracy, for example, the distribution of the impasto throughout the different parts of the painting according to the values in the drawing. On the other hand, it reinforces the compositional choices I made, and helps me make sure I maintain the proportions of the large shapes and the values."
