Town Showcase: A Sneak Peek of the Plaza Shops

Hi everyone, Chloe here for today’s Patreon post! We’ve been hard at work creating our town, and we have many cool things in store. Today, I will be showing a little sneak peek at some shops you’ll be able to find in the plaza of the Old Town.

Sketching Out Ideas

Before starting anything in the game itself, we sketch out our ideas. This allows us to plan the look of our build, the layout, and the new items that will be required to give the shop its identity. It also allows us to explore some different styles for our builds quickly. In the case of the plaza shops, they are located in the Old Town, so the architectural style was already set. You can check out our previous post in which we showcased some houses in a similar style.

The first building I started with was a flower shop. We had decided that we wanted the plaza shops to show their wares outside the bounds of their stores, so I made sure to add plants and bouquets outside on display.

Mixing classy and chic, the flower shop has a well-maintained appearance overall and is surrounded by plants! In my sketches, I also tested other colors like blue instead of pink for its exterior, but we ended up liking the pink better.

The second shop I worked on was a hairdresser. This one was meant to be the immediate neighbour to the flower shop, so I decided to contrast their vibes; I wanted something less pretty and trendy, slightly more dated.

All in all, the building is in good shape. In this case, we had nothing on display on the plaza, so we added a bench so customers could wait outside for their appointment. The barber poles and color scheme were also a must.

Lastly, their other neighbour is an unused building. We don’t want all the shops to be brand new and open, as it would allow us to add content and stores in the plaza as we add content in the game. For example, a pet shop being opened when we add pets into the game!

As you’ll see in the screenshots, we decided to go for neutrals rather than green for this one. We felt like the stores would all be fighting for attention if they all featured bold colors.

As part of creating the plaza, we also experimented with different ideas for what could be at the center.

Ideas for a central element to the plaza. We also tried different ones, such as statues. We decided to go with the well, to fit with our olden look, and because we have other places in town in mind for the fountains, big tree, and statues.

Sketching Out Ideas

Now, we have a lot of things done for the town. Today, I am only showing you the three buildings mentioned before, so I will be making use of a secret technique (blurring) to hide some things from you all. We have a lot of exciting stuff in store, and we will be showing it to you shortly, but we want to keep the surprise until then! 🫣 So bear with me, and I hope you’ll enjoy regardless!

At this point in time, it is not 100% confirmed or decided which stores will be rabbitholes and which ones won’t.

The 3 buildings share neighbouring lots, with the florist and the hairdresser having connected lots. With some precision, you can draw walls reeaaaal close to the lot borders, which gives the townhouse look!

The flower shop may appear taller than the hairdresser, and it is! We don’t notice it from the plaza side since it is all level, but on the other side, the street is sloping, so the florist is higher up the slope than the hairdresser is.

On the side of the florist, you have an overabundance of ivy, and a stairway that leads you to the street (and to more exciting stuff 😉 ).

Up on the flower shop’s roof, you have a little terrace used for growing plants with a little greenhouse.

At street level, we can see the little setup Bloom and the little decor Headlines have. Psst psst, the barber poles rotate when you play, and it’s a fun little detail to have!

Now, onto our abandoned neighbour. It is much more unkempt, with more stains and boarded-up windows.

The door has been locked until the building is bought/rented! I created a new item, newspaper pages, to board up windows. You will mostly find those in display windows of disused shops around town.

Close-up of the plaza well. It is unused now, and surrounded by benches. We wanted the plaza to be a place where Paras could gather and shop together.

That’s it for today! What other shops do you think the plaza will have? What are you excited to see next for the town? Let me know!

Until next time!

Chloe(^ω^)

Im thinking they’ll be a tattoo & piercing parlor somewhere in there 🤭

hannah

Love the detail and the ability to have the buildings go to the edge of the lot to create the townhouse look. Clearly can see all the heart the team is putting into this game. I’m hopeful about the shops and would love to actually be able to buy things and go to place like a barber shop/hair dresser.

Stephanie LaBella

oh wow, I'm finally reading this after how long?! How gorgeous is this townnn 😍 I'm in love, I wish I could live here in real life 💞 Phenomenal developments!!

ZLoves212

I hope there's pineapple on the pizza ! Makes everything taste sweeter ❤️

Girth Lush

OMG!! OMG!!! OMG!!! IT'S JUST GORGEOUS ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I LOVE THE DESIGN 👏👏👏👏💖💖💖💖

Nathalie Carluccio

Will any of the shops be rabbit holes or will be actually be able to go into each shop?

Sammy Clark

this looks absolutely stunning, literally one of the best things i have seen this year!! can't wait to get my hands on the game and go explore the town

teplavecernice

Any chance the color will be added back to that abandoned shop once it is purchased/running? Love the boarded up windows and stuff. I think it would be amazing and take the next step, having the new owners refurbish and renovate a little!

Zach D

omggg i love the idea of abandoned shops opening up again!! i normally don’t like to compare the two much, but something i don’t like about the sims 4 is how once you get new packs you have no where to experience the content but the new world. also i’d love for the barber to be functional so that paras can get haircuts there! it’s a small thing but could be cute for back to school hair cuts and dyeing our paras hair!

lydianlovesyou43

A lil Coffee shop at the plaza would be cute too 🥰 But you already did a great job. Im so in Love with what we already saw of the town 😍 cant wait to see more of it.

Priska

As long as you guys make the barber shop an interactive, functional shop then I'll be happy. Would love to send my Paras there to get a trim and/or have my para become a barber or a hairstylist as a career. Keep up the great work team!

Jordan Harrison

Absolutely awesome. Hoping we will have residences that are similar looking . Really love this aesthetic.

deetheDeesigner

We don't currently have something like this, but it's an interesting idea and is something that we could do! Thanks for sharing!

Chloé Ouellet

Details about buying public/commercial lots are not ironed out yet, so we will be sharing more info about it later on! For sure, functional player-run and created shops are not something planned for for Early Access

Chloé Ouellet

I am weak for millennial green, so for sure you'll get to see it somewhere in the game ahah. Maybe as a roof color!

Chloé Ouellet

I agree, I would also want to work as a hairdresser 🥹

Tella

I really hope the hairdressers isn't a rabbithole! Having to go there in order to dye your para's hair or change it would be super immersive!

Nana

agree! thank u for figuring out for me what seemed off 😅

Sehrys

Looks really nice. The only thing I find a bit irritating is that the shutters don't match the windows in size and shape.

Daniela Feurer

This is all so beautiful, I love that you all went with an old town look, but one inspired by Canada and Europe, everything from TS is either the US or somewhere in South America, with only a few worlds being from other parts of the world. I also like there being a lot of old rundown places, so we can have things look not so perfect all the time, that tends to get boring. And knowing how big the first town even is going to be, don't feel rushed to add more right away, I know some people are suggesting or asking for a bunch of bigger things, like sky scrapers, but I mean this is a town area, there aren't going to be sky scrapers and there shouldn't be, lol! I'm fine with the areas you have already showed us to start with, it's a lot less overwhelming that way. I am sure you get annoyed sometimes with people obviously trying to push you to add "The Sims " like things into the game, like " moodlets " with everything, which frankly I don't think is needed, just come up with your own things for the game, we don't need every life sim to have everything The Sims has, since much of it is unrealistic in the first place. I want a truly new game, with new better ways of playing with the lives of simulated people, not the same thing we've had for the last 25 years. Sure some things are a given or expected of all life sims, but not everything. Also forgot, I wanted to say I am glad a town is called a town and not a world, I mean the WHOLE outside of the game is a world, with towns and cities, not the towns and cities themselves, lol! That worked with previous TS games, but since TS4 made it possible to go to all " towns and cities " they shouldn't be called worlds anymore. But because Simmers are used to them being called Worlds, TS still called them that, but you don't ever have to do that, because this is a truly open world, not like TS3 which was a somewhat open world, but each town/city was it's own world, until later when we could move to another " world " but would lose contact with everyone from the " world " we started in. So this will be a much more open world, because all the towns/cities will be in one world, like in real life.

Clara M Johnson

Really loved this overview of the shops. Love Old Town, reminds me of the old Sim games. I do admit, I was hoping the abandoned shop on the left would be used instead; I love the green on it. I do enjoy the little details added on the buildings, too. Makes it look lived in and more alive c

BooDotBoo .

Omg I love this! Every time I read one of your posts I get that excited feeling in my tummy, like a little kid at Christmas! I can't wait (but I can, so please take your time)

Gill Reid

Some other suggestions: park(s), some sort of downtown with modern office buildings and skyscrapers and maybe a "nightlife" district with night clubs, pubs etc, hospital, police station, train station (even if it's just decorative for now), campus/university/college, gym, swimming pool, stadium, hotels

Chiara

Amazing work you guys! I love getting these sneak peaks into your process. You're so thorough. Every detail is handled with so much care. I adore the cozy, sweet, playful character of everything you've made so far. It's very obviously done with love. Can't wait for the game. It's everything I've dreamed of since I was 10! Good luck with everything, you're doing amazing!

katarina

This is all so cooool.. I have a character who's a baker, it'd be soso fun if we would be able to rent out that empty lot and make it into a little shop like a little bakery or something 🫶 Is it planned to let people do something sorta like this?

Lyric

Gadzzzzz, I'm so sad you didn't go with Green for the roof. Green is the new neutral colour after all.

MadamMoose

I love it so far. I'd love to see a little cafe or restaurant included, but it would need to have para's able to go there. Also a grocery store.

Rachel

I think a bookstore or a library would fit the cozy vibes of the town perfectly :)

pixelmara

The town looks amazing but I have a question about skills and could'nt wait anymore to ask, since there is a long time without any news on that front. Hope you don't mind :D Will you have a system to compare skills? For example, if one Para have a cooking skill level 6 and another Para have a cooking skill level 1 I can make an "Teach cooking skill" interaction for Para with a level 6 teach cooking skill to Para with level 1, with corresponding animations, moodlets and relationships and skill bonus. The same way, I could have a competition interaction, with those parameters also depending on the skill level. Then I could make baking competition when the most skilled Para had a bigger chance to win. Since we won't have scripted mods, only new assets (wich is really powerfull per se), the existence of those systems could improve significantly the possibilities of gameplay.

Panthro Samah

We don't have exact plans for content creation after Early access release! we will adapt to fan demands and what content is missing at launch :) but both ideas sound cool! For sure, I feel like an equestrian center or stuff like stables will be a must when they are introduced in the game

Chloé Ouellet

this is looking so beautiful so far!

Kirby Tardos

Lucie Baha

This is so beautiful, great work! 💚

pekeniax

This looks amazing! I am so, so excited to try out building in this game for myself!

Fran Denman

Great work as always!✨ I would love to see more hobby/skill shops like an art studio, gym, or music store

Dr. Eggman

This is so cute and aesthetically pleasing, I love it! Some ideas that others have mentioned that I’d like to see as well are an ice cream shop, a pizzeria, and a toy shop. A farmers market would be cool too. I’d also love a tarot caravan or some type of occult store (maybe not for the early access version of the game but later on). 💗

Ariana

Awesome

Auntyleti

Nobody said that 😉

Josephin01

I thought the early access would be at the beginning of the year. Oh well.

Cel Riegle

this looks amazing! i think it would be cool if the game had smaller vendors around town with stalls or booths in addition to the storefronts

JakobeyPlays

Oh, that would be so fun to have special seasonal markets!

Andrea Simoncic

This looks amazing! I love the shops! 😍 Some ideas: • I would love to have a clothing store and a jewelry shop (maybe where you can find jewlery you can’t find anywhere else) • A tourist shop would be cool where you can buy items like paintings, decor items, hats, clothes, foods, and jewelry that represent the old town’s culture. • A cafeteria and a pizzeria would be nice! 🥰 • A bakery • A toy shop • Grocery store • And I love the idea of a pet shop! 🥰

Lisa-Marie Berzelius

I know this will probably be added later on, but I'd love it if when winter comes, there could be Christmas Markets!

Sarah Rodrigues

this is great the routine thing that would make the townies paras so real 👀 the lore🤗🤗

Leelamutant

I would love to see the "Pasta Festival"🍝 make it to the game since i saw it in that old post from years ago with doggo sitting there cant take it out of my mind it would be so cool😋🍝🍕🎉

Leelamutant

even small details like the cracks on the roof and the cables on the side of the buildings it adds so much realism to it so inmersive🤗 i could be in this plaza for hours

Leelamutant

Its been a minute since i saw so much love put into a game, this is amazing guys🫶❤️

Leelamutant

I'm loving every detail. Soon, we'll being able to stroll in this lovely Para town! ✨️ Wonderful build!

tey711

I love this so much. Thank you team!

Rylie

I'd love all of these things too!

Fran Smith

Water tool features probably won't be available for Early Access release, but it doesn't mean us devs aren't able to create lakes and oceans and the likes ;)

Chloé Ouellet

Bought or rented? For shops? Sounds awesome!

Gina Ayars-Ritchey

C'est vraiment beau! 😍

Stephanie Marion

I know you can't give away anything but are you somehow planning to have lakes or oceans despite the fact the features to create those aren't ready yet? at least give me hint but answer me Please 😭

Joel Jimenez

We created some broken windows when we created the factory we showcased a few weeks ago, so you'll have some, yes! :)

Chloé Ouellet

OMG I can’t wait I love the vibes so far 🤍🤍 Also I would love a Pizzeria, Ice Cream Shop, Clothing Store, Shoe Store , Antique Shop , Furniture Store ☺️🩷🤍🩵

LBoogie

I'm literally going insane, this is all so freaking cute

aza

I really hope the town will feel interactive. For example, being able to toss a coin into the wishing well and receive a small moodlet in return. I'd also love to see recurring events like a weekly market, flea market, art nights, live music, festivals. Or maybe even something like a special holiday called "Paraday" where Paras celebrate in their own unique, in-game way. As for community lots, it would be cool to see things like a museum, shopping mall, library, arcade, swimming pool, photo studio, bakery, and maybe even a post office to send and receive letters or little gifts.

Rose

Oh, Chloé, you knocked it out of the park with this one!! Like, so far out of the park the park is now a dot! It looks AMAZING and I can't wait to play with it!!! ❤️ 🤩 🌟 The details are just impeccable!! As usual, you make it look so easy to create natural and *real* buildings! I really love the idea of having boarded up buildings that sort of work as placeholders for future buildings when new features are added. It will be so fun to dream about what businesses might move in! ❤️ Of course the abandoned house gives me all sorts of ideas for making a run down shack for my poor rags-to-riches paras 😉 Do you think there will eventually be broken windows that we can put the newspapers on?

Zahlea

Oh this looks so nice! You can tell a lot of thought goes into it and the prospect of shops being updated once more content becomes available is exciting!! I also like the suggested ideas of ice cream shop, bakery, cafe (maybe in combination with a bookstore?), restaurants, maybe a small supermarket.... endless ideas!

Noeba

Wow it looks so nice, can’t wait to see more!! 😍😍 I think that a gothic style church would fit in super well with those sort of old European vibes. Also as some people have already mentioned, an ice cream shop or cute bakery would also fit in perfectly. Even a small pizzaria with outside seating. Otherwise I also love the idea of more old / unique shops such was book or thrift shop. Definitely a fresh market with the fruit and vegetables outs, some quick take way fresh food for example. A nails / manicure salon could also work well. And then something for entertainment, in particular a theater (could even be an old unused building for the time being) would add additional interest to that part of town. Now of course I don’t know how big the plaza would be in order to fit all of this 😅 but I assume that you’ll have more areas in the old town which will have different shops? Great job, and can’t wait for the release date!

Cassia Teixeira

it's a terrain paint! you will be able to add it to your own lots :)

Chloé Ouellet

Is the cobblestone here a terrain paint or a floor? I'm already planning a custom variation to the cobblestone in my head to give it mossy bits to paint on in some areas if it's a paint

Jo Landers

This looks so good!!!😃

I kinda forGoT

Wow… I’m speechless. The city looks absolutely breathtaking. The attention to detail, the atmosphere… it honestly moved me. You can really feel how much love and talent you’re putting into this.

Tereza Restrepo García

I'd love to see a nail salon, produce stand, ice cream shop, bookstore, baby store, bistro, tea/coffee shop would be so cute here

phoenix grey

oh my god I'm gonna cry this is amazing!! The barber pile rotates!? This is incredible! This has raised my excitement by 300%!!

Neeon

I love the vibe! It's so cute, charming and everything I could ask for. Would love for my para to be able to move in to that flower balcony apartment" Love the feminin touch! I resturant with indoor and outdoor seating would fit in well. I also hope in the future that my paras can start up their own business here. A shop, bakery, cafe, resturant, museum etc. I also hope that some of the same characters will pop up every time you visit this area. Like a crazy old cat lady who is always sitting on one of the benches in the mornings, and in the evening, she's on her balcony. Or a homeless person who is always begging for money outside the flower shop, until the owner ask him to go somewhere else. Or the same old guy always sitting in one of the cafe's drinking coffee every morning and reading the newspaper. Or the pretty lady who is sitting at the restaurant eating dinner by herself every Friday and Sunday. Or the business men meeting for lunch Monday to friday. I love to have characters in the game having routines, that you kind of have to figure out yourself. And also you feel they add something to the community and you know them a little, without talking to them.

Flinka

That would be a fun interraction! :)

Chloé Ouellet

Ohhhh this is so amazing!!! Thank you for your work, I'm so waiting for early access! I would like to see so many different shops, so I can't decide which one more.😅 Like... Fresh fruits and vegetables shop? Organic and vegan food shop? Different style clothes shop? Tea shop/cafe? Well, I would like EVERYTHING! Love you, paralives team. 🥰🤩

We will

SoulfulDawg

What if you add an interaction to “Toss a coin” in the well. This gives your para a hidden probability modifier for 24 hours: either all random outcomes have an increased probability of succeeding or a decreased probability of succeeding

Michael

It looks... Amazing!! Will the upper floors be liveable? That would rock, if so!! Someone already suggested a couple I was thinking, but the barbershop made me think a nail salon would be a good addition. If there comes a point where my para can do hobbies like sewing, scrapbooking, crafting, etc., having a little store that sells supplies could be cute. Even an art supply store since painting is already in the game! Outside could be a big tube of paint, murals along the building, another wacky sculpture, etc.

Madragal

some suggestions: theatre/cabaret, library, bookstore, shoe shop, electronics, cinema, mega mall, car dealer (for when you'll introduce cars perhaps?), museum, government building/city hall, churches/cathedral, supermarket, records store, art gallery

Chiara

Omg omg omg omg omg! I love this freaking world so far! It’s so full of charm and style and I cannot get over the way it’s all coming together 🥹🥹 I get the feeling I’m gonna return to this post again and again to find more details. Keep up the great work team, I’m so excited! The world is so gorgeous and this game is so so full of love

Cece

I love this SO MUCH!!!!!!😍❤️

Lisa Hedlund

Hi Chloe! Thanks for showing us more of the town. I love the style of the plaza shops and how the plaza as a whole is looking. I could easily see there being a small corner shop somewhere there. And maybe a second hand shop. I'm living for everything we've seen from the town so far!

Trisha

This is so beautiful. I can’t wait to start building. It’s so magical. I can’t see the love and effort place into this game! When is EA?!?

Rin Canono

oh this is so cute!! even without any paras around this place already looks so lively! i'm hoping on a cafe and/or bakery and an old bookstore! a pizzeria would be cute too

Melina W

Raise your hand if you desperately tried to discern something in the blurred parts of the pictures.

Chiara

It's all so cute and I love that even the abandoned buildings fit in with the cozy setting. I think a cute little thrift store/second hand clothing store would be very cute here 😊

spunkyace

I love the attention to detail! Amazing work!

EliseFra

Chloe this is absolutely stunning!!!! It feels so lively, vibrant and realistic! It's so charming aaahhh thank you so much for this post

Laura K.

The atmosphere is so cute and cosy !! 🥰 To go well with the vibes, I would see well a little library (even better if it is a literary café) or a bakery ! It may also be interesting to put a really modern-vibe pastry shop, like with vibrant color or all white, to contrast with the other shops !

Steamvamp

It looks so awwsome!!

Sophie Crispin

I love what you have done with the plaza! It'd be cool if eventually we could own businesses and we could rent that boarded up building and create our own business like a pet grooming/boarding etc.

Diana Paproski

Everything looks super nice as always! I love the European historical flair 😍 A small, romantic restaurant with outdoor seating and/or an ice cream parlor would look great on the plaza. And definitely: a bookshop! 📚

CookieCake

I hope the town will have the street from the announcement video

Chiara

These are sooo pretty! And the art style is great! Can't wait to see the rest of the city.

Rodrigo Escribano

There's different reasons why we went for the well rather than the tree (for instance, the plaza is actually narrow, so the tree ended up always being in the way, ahah), but without giving away too much, let's just say the idea for the tree is kept in mind for somewhere else ;)

Chloé Ouellet

That looks amazing. I did prefer the idea of the tree rather than the well in the center though, made for a more cozy vibe :)

Christophe Zajac

Amazing concepts and builds!! I especially love the terrace at the top of the flower shop, so excited to see the rest of the town eventually! You guys are doing a spectacular job with it

Pvydrow

I love this!!

AJ Westhoff

Restaurant and cinema and baby store can't wait to play Paralives

Sláine Sheils

Oh this is so amazing! I love the contrast of the buildings and the colors! It really looks like a street

Jaysia Dillon

Will we be able to buy items from stores and use them in game?
