🎶 Recording Parli Voices 🗣️
What’s up everybodyyyyyyyy! Andrei here, ready to deliver my very last Patreon post before the release of the game’s Early Access next month! AAAAAHHHHHH! It’s been a crazy couple of months, so I was pretty happy to make this post to talk about the voice-over recordings of the game!
🎥 In the video above, you saw the recording sessions I did to voice all sorts of animations that will be in Early Access. As one of the voice actors of the game, I got to pretty much record over 500 takes without counting the discarded ones! It was such a fun process to become more fluent in Parli and polish my not-professional-level acting skills!
📖 Parli Recap & Choosing Animations 🤸
A while ago, Alex and I designed the made-up language of the game: Parli! A gibberish system made to sound cozy and distinct from other titles. You can find out more about it in this post! Once that was done, all it took was doing some teamwork with our amazingly talented animators, Alice and Lina. We got to choose which of their animations needed to have some voices on them and organize them in a huge list!
🎧 Producing the Voice Overs
In order to create the voice-overs, I first assembled a bunch of them into a “Storyboard” which is an in-game feature that lets you create all sorts of cinematic scenes with your characters and builds (find more about that here). Once I had them in video, I just went one by one, recording sooooo many different takes. At first I had to do roughly around 40 takes for each animation to get it right as I wanted. Then I would choose the best 3-4 out of them, edit them and put them in the game as random variations. It was especially fun to perform all the different ranges of emotions our characters can express.
That’s pretty much it: short and sweet. I still can’t believe this will be my last post. It feels like just yesterday I was showing my first music demos here on Patreon, hoping you guys would like them. It’s crazy how far we’ve come, and I really want to say to each single one of you, from the bottom of my heart: thank you. Thank you for your unwavering support, thank you for your super kind words, thank you for your constructive feedback, your passion, your jokes, your excitement, everything. Besides the fact that this game couldn’t have been made without you, it's mostly the fact that we would’ve never been as inspired throughout the process without a community as beautiful as this one. It changed my life. That’s it. There’s nothing more to say, hehe. On that note, it’s time to give the last sprint and give you the game that you’ve been asking for so long. So back to work!!

I get that you want to end the Patreon once you have revenue from the game‘s sales, but this sort of behind-the-scenes look into game development is such a rarity that we‘d miss it greatly. A game made with so much community engagement and transparency is such a breath of fresh air in the industry, and I feel Paralives will only benefit from retaining this approach. It’s a little heartbreaking to read you guys‘ "final posts". I’m no marketing major, but l can imagine that in the age of influencers and the newer generations thirst for authenticity, this sort of content will serve as great advertisement for the game. Many thousands of us have been with you guys for the better part of a decade, and I can only speak for myself, but without this Patreon, I feel there would be a "void" for the community that has emerged in that time. I don’t know what other social media outside of Patreon could be a good replacement without the focus on crowdfunding, but I‘m sure there is ways 🩵

I've been spreading the word on Sims' post I see about Paralives to be kind and remember it's early access so report issues, be patient, and have fun with it. I don't want people to compare it to a game that's exsisted for 25 years and give up on it because they forget what early access means for smaller creators. I have taken off of work for this and even if there are bugs I am going to vibe with the music alone!

I'll almost be sad when the game comes out...almost... :D What am I going to do with my Friday late nights now? Hmmmmm.? And thank you for the music. I'm sure I'm speaking for a LOT of people when I say that I want to be able to listen to this music outside the game also. You would have no shortage of buyers if you consented to sell the music as a separate package. I've never been remotely interested in buying game music separately for any other game - the music, while often great also usually ends up repetitive. The music for THIS game is different. Nothing repetitive about it. Every song is totally unique and wonderful. If the music was available separately, I'd be one of your first customers standing in line to buy it. :-) Thank you for a wonderful journey and for what we all know will be a wonderful game!! And most of all, thank you for making such a wonderful community in one little corner of the world. The world is in desperate need of these types of communities.

Maybe during Early Access you'll grace us with more updates ? Certainly we expect a Kurama behind-the-scenes when pets are added. It's been a great adventure for us too, although obviously in a different way. Thank you so much for letting us inside your home and inside your process, so we could learn about not just what you do, but how. This has been such a privilege and I'm absolutely not moved to tears thinking that it was the last time, I don't know what you're talking about, please stop looking at me ! We knew about Parli from an earlier post, but it's fascinating to me how you create the language specifically as you record. "How would x sound ? What would be the word for it ?" is probably your bread and butter regarding voice acting, but for me, I had only seen such recordings from artists who had very little input in the very vocabulary of their characters (particularly for older franchises where things have been set in stone for decades). I wish we had seen a comparison between your process as a voice actor AND sound designer, and the process of other actors to showcase that even more. I really like that Paras don't always speak when they have emotions. You recorded sighs, breathing sounds, gasps and more, that I absolutely love because they make a character feel alive without the game being constantly "busy". It matches the "cozy" vibe perfectly, and walks the line between gameplay and realism like the rest of Paralives' identity. You're so good at this. I wish you the best moving forward.

The 3-4 voice recording variations per animation refers to having different takes of 1 same action to not feel the repetitiveness of the voices. For example: if a para is playing the "Surprised" animation, they can either say "Ah!" or "Wow" or "Oww". If the para would always say just "Ah!" the game would get repetitive specially when there'll be many characters sharing the same voice. 2. We will have 4 different adult voices, 1 for children, 1 for Toddlers and 1 for Babies! More options will probably come down the line!

2025-11-07 15:27:09 +0000 UTComg its all just so bittersweet. the work you guys have put in over the years and watching this game take shape, its rlly been a weekly highlight for me. watching the creative process has been so wonderful, hearing the music and sound effects and now voices, seeing the art and mechanics take shape, and seeing the patience and love put into it all... to me its pretty much as exciting as the (un)finished product. these dwindling posts make me so sad but the next chapter is coming and i know all of us patrons are so proud of you all aaaa :(

Also, what's the painting one where he's just looking around scared? lool. Is it because it's dark out? Thank you for sharing the process behind all the music. It's amazing how much music one person can do. I was always gobsmacked everytime you pulled out ANOTHER instrument and began playing it like a pro.

For a non-actor, I think you did super good Andrei, super in character (even tho that’s literally your character you’re voicing over for ahahah 😂) I have a question, you mentioned that you’ve done 3/4 variations for each animation? Will the sound of the voice be changed to accommodate different sound levels, or this will all be a variation for the same character / voice? Could you also share how many voice actors you got? I would assume that’s how many available voice variations we would get? Also, can not wait for the livestream next week!! I’m hoping for a longer one 💗
