The Matrix all Wired Up

Well, I finished all of the soldering and put the knobs on.

But when I went to test it, eight of the pots were bad.  HUH?  That's an unusually high failure rate.  I didn't test them beforehand because, what can go wrong with a brand new potentiometer?  I pulled 8 more out of the bag, and checked them, and all test OK.  Hard to believe I had 8 duds out of the 20 I installed.  Maybe I burned them when I was soldering .. dad-gum it, now I have to pull those out and replace them.  Another couple hours hassle.

They are built on a silicon base, but the resistive strip inside, or the comb, must be more delicate than they used to be. Or I had a bizarre 40% bad batch. I tested signal paths and my soldering seems OK, and all of the summing resistors check out, so it has to be the pots.

Still tidy. Pots used to be pretty heat tolerant, made out of fiberglass and bakelite (or something similar). I can't imagine you could cook one, unless they're made completely out of plastic now.
