Incidentally, I used to think "pardner" just meant "partner" and cowboys called each other that because there weren't very many women out on the range, and, well, you figure it out. However, new research suggests they may have been saying "pardoner" because the range also was short on priests, requiring cowboys to hear each other's confessions. I suppose both theories could be true.
