New Artwork: Coolest Street in the World

One of the things Montreal started doing for the pandemic was closing streets off to traffic and making them pedestrian shopping & dining zones. Plenty of main streets in different neighbourhoods did this. It meant restaurants could put their terrasses right into the street, shops could install outdoor shopping, and events happened right there.

I was out taking photos at night. This particular bar is mainly outside like this because it serves beach-themed drinks. I really loved how everyone was sitting in this compact rectangular mass and the geometry of the pavement decoration. This also checked off my box for painting more night 'scapes.

Wellington Street ended up being selected as one of the Coolest Streets in the World a couple weeks into this painting.

Perspective set up.

The lineart is 3 different shades, just like my Bistro Jojo piece so it feels less heavy where it is brighter in the image. I'm not sure if it shows through in the final image, but I still think it's better than solid black.

I focused on getting the pavement right since this would make or break this painting. It has to be the right value, right saturation, and things need to be even. There's some crooked lines I fixed later very carefully. In the end, I only used watercolor and ink.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take more photos in between. The top portion came together very quickly. You would have seen me work on the walls & the lineart in the stream, otherwise I finished it while listening to neuroscience lectures. I am trying to learn about brain chemistry & hormones, which is perfect for painting bricks.

This ended up being the only painting I could get done between business travel. A pretty good addition to my Montreal collection.

I'm still figuring out how Patreon works so I attached the final scanned version of it as an attachment. The images here are a bit higher res than what I post to the public. I will have it up in my shops soon since I want to take advantage of the Christmas season.
