Chapter 6: Shadows in the Shallows
Added 2025-07-27 03:47:41 +0000 UTCPetalburg City hummed with late afternoon activity as Andrew and his team crossed through the western gate. Unlike the tiny settlement from the games, the real Petalburg sprawled before them—a proper city with multi-story buildings, bustling streets, and citizens going about their daily business alongside their Pokémon partners.
"This is incredible," Andrew breathed, taking in the sights. "So much bigger than I expected."
Sionna remained alert on his shoulder, her amber eyes scanning their surroundings with practiced vigilance. Zephyr flew slow circles above them, clearly excited by the new environment but staying close enough to hear Andrew's voice if needed. In his arms, Belladonna peered from her portable container with shy curiosity at the unfamiliar urban landscape.
"First stop should be the Pokémon Center," Andrew decided, checking his PokéNav for directions. "You all deserve a proper rest after our training session, and Bell needs a more comfortable habitat than this temporary container."
Following the map, they made their way through the city streets. Andrew couldn't help noticing how naturally Pokémon were integrated into everyday life here—a mailman delivering packages with a Pelipper soaring alongside him, a construction crew working with the assistance of a Machop and Geodude, children playing in a park under the watchful eye of a community Gardevoir.
The Pokémon Center rose before them, its distinctive red roof and modern glass facade standing out among the surrounding buildings. As they approached the entrance, the automatic doors slid open with a soft chime.
"Welcome to Petalburg City Pokémon Center," called a cheerful voice from behind the counter. "How may we—oh!"
The Nurse Joy's exclamation caused Andrew to pause. "Is something wrong?"
"Not at all," she replied, her expression shifting to one of professional interest. "It's just that we don't often see trainers carrying Feebas. They're quite rare in captivity, and notoriously difficult to train."
Andrew stepped forward, protective instinct flaring. "Belladonna is a valued member of my team," he said firmly but politely. "She has incredible potential."
Nurse Joy's face softened with a smile. "I meant no offense. In fact, I'm impressed by your insight. Feebas are indeed remarkable Pokémon when given proper care and affection." She gestured for him to approach the counter. "Let's get all your partners registered and checked in for treatment."
After completing the standard health assessment, Nurse Joy showed Andrew to a special section of the Center he hadn't seen in smaller towns—an aquatic habitat area where water Pokémon could rest comfortably.
"Belladonna can stay here while you're in the city," she explained, indicating a private pool with clean, temperature-controlled water. "It's much better than portable containers for extended periods."
"This is perfect," Andrew said, carefully transferring Bell to her new temporary home. The Feebas immediately dove beneath the surface, exploring the artificial underwater landscaping with evident delight.
"She seems happy," observed Nurse Joy. "Many trainers don't realize how important proper aquatic environments are for water types. They're not just fish; they're intelligent creatures who need stimulation and comfort just like any other Pokémon."
Andrew nodded thoughtfully. "I've been trying to make sure she doesn't feel left out during our journey. It's challenging since she can't simply walk alongside us like Sionna."
"That kind of consideration is what separates good trainers from great ones," Nurse Joy replied with an approving nod. "Now, would you like a room for the night? We have several available."
"Yes, please," Andrew said gratefully. "We've been traveling all day, and I think we could all use a good rest before exploring Petalburg properly tomorrow."
After getting his room key and setting his backpack inside, Andrew returned to the Center's main lobby. "I thought we might take a quick walk around the city before dinner," he suggested to Sionna and Zephyr. "Bell seems quite content in her pool, and it would be good to get our bearings."
Both Pokémon indicated their agreement, and they headed back outside, Sionna trotting beside Andrew while Zephyr alternated between flying ahead and returning to his shoulder.
The evening air was pleasantly cool as they explored the central districts of Petalburg. Andrew found himself drawn toward the northwestern section of the city, where the Petalburg Gym stood according to his PokéNav.
"Might as well see what we're up against, eventually," he mused to his companions.
The gym was impressive—a traditional building with modern elements, surrounded by carefully maintained gardens. A sign outside indicated that Norman, the Gym Leader, specialized in Normal-type Pokémon, just as Andrew remembered from the games.
As they approached for a closer look, the gym's doors opened, and a group of people emerged, engaged in animated conversation. Among them, Andrew spotted a familiar figure that made him stop in his tracks—a girl with distinctive brown hair styled in a way he instantly recognized.
"May?" he called out, surprised to see her so soon after their parting in Littleroot.
The girl turned, her expression shifting from confusion to recognition. "Andrew! What are you doing in Petalburg already?"
She broke away from the group, waving goodbye to them as she approached Andrew. "I thought you'd still be on Route 102, training your Vulpix."
"We made good time," Andrew replied with a smile. "And I've added to my team since we last met."
May's eyes widened as she noticed Zephyr perched on his shoulder. "A Pidgey? That's unexpected for Hoenn. And so well-trained already, by the look of it."
Zephyr puffed out her chest feathers proudly at the compliment.
"I have a Feebas too," Andrew added. "She's resting at the Pokémon Center's aquatic habitat at the moment."
"A Feebas?" May's surprise was evident. "Those are incredibly rare! And notoriously difficult to raise." She studied him with new interest. "You really aren't taking the conventional approach to team building, are you?"
Andrew shrugged. "I believe every Pokémon has potential, not just the ones most trainers consider powerful or easy to train."
May nodded thoughtfully. "My dad says something similar, actually. That the mark of a truly skilled trainer is bringing out the best in any Pokémon, not just naturally gifted ones."
"Your dad?" Andrew asked, though he already knew the answer from his game knowledge.
"Norman, the Gym Leader here," May confirmed. "I'm actually visiting my mom today—we live in this city. Dad's away at a conference in Rustboro right now, though. League business." She sounded slightly disappointed. "He won't be back for another week."
Andrew felt a mixture of relief and disappointment himself. Relief because he knew his team wasn't ready to challenge a Gym Leader of Norman's caliber yet, but disappointment because meeting the man would have been fascinating.
"That's too bad," he said sincerely. "I was hoping to at least meet him, even if we're not ready for a Gym battle yet."
May smiled. "You'll get your chance. He's always excited to meet promising new trainers." She glanced at Sionna and Zephyr appraisingly. "And from what I can see, you definitely qualify as promising."
"Thanks," Andrew replied, feeling a strange mix of emotions at receiving praise from a character—no, a person—he had once controlled as a player in a game. "How's your journey going? Still focused on Contests?"
May's eyes lit up. "Absolutely! I've been training Chikorita intensively, and we've already mastered two performance combinations that I think will really impress the judges." Her enthusiasm was infectious. "I also caught a Surskit near Oldale Town. Its elegance on the water surface is perfect for the Visual Category."
"That's great," Andrew said, genuinely happy for her. "I'm still figuring out our path, but I'm thinking we'll try both Gyms and maybe some Contests too."
"In that case," May said, a competitive glint entering her eyes, "how about a practice battle? Not a full match since we're in the city, but just a quick one-on-one to see how we're progressing?"
Andrew felt a surge of excitement. A battle with May—something that would have been a scripted game event with predetermined dialogue and outcomes in his previous life—was now a real possibility with unpredictable results.
"I'd love that," he replied. "There's a small practice field behind the Pokémon Center—I noticed it when we checked in."
"Perfect," May agreed. "Let's head there now, before it gets too dark."
As they walked back toward the Center, May chatted about her experiences since leaving Littleroot. She'd already visited Rustboro briefly to observe a Contest but had returned to Petalburg to see her mother before heading to Verdanturf Town, where the next rookie-level Contest would be held.
The practice field was empty when they arrived—a simple dirt arena with basic field markings and sturdy fencing to contain battle effects. A few benches lined the sides for spectators, though none were present at this hour.
"One-on-one?" May confirmed as they took positions at opposite ends of the field. "Since your Feebas is resting, it'll be your Vulpix or Pidgey against my Chikorita or Surskit."
Andrew considered his options. "I'll go with Sionna," he decided after a moment's thought. The Vulpix stepped forward, taking a battle stance with practiced poise.
"In that case, I choose Chikorita!" May called, releasing her partner in a flash of light.
The small, green Pokémon materialized with a determined cry, the leaf on its head swaying gently as it took position. Despite its diminutive size, it carried itself with confidence that spoke of May's dedicated training.
"Ladies first," Andrew offered with a smile.
"Such a gentleman," May replied with playful sarcasm. "Chikorita, let's start with Razor Leaf!"
The grass-type Pokémon swung its head leaf, releasing a barrage of sharp-edged leaves that spun toward Sionna with surprising speed.
"Sionna, use Ember to burn through them, then Quick Attack!" Andrew countered.
The Vulpix exhaled a precise stream of small flames that incinerated the incoming leaves, then darted forward with blinding speed, striking Chikorita before it could recover from its initial attack.
"Nice combination," May called as Chikorita slid backward from the impact. "But we're just getting started! Chikorita, Sweet Scent followed by Tackle!"
A pink mist emanated from Chikorita's leaf, drifting toward Sionna. The soothing, distracting fragrance was a perfect setup for the grass-type's follow-up Tackle.
"Don't breathe it in, Sionna! Use Will-O-Wisp to create an air current away from you!" Andrew called.
With impressive control, Sionna summoned ghostly blue flames that circled around her, creating a heat draft that pushed the Sweet Scent away before it could affect her. However, this defensive maneuver left her momentarily distracted, allowing Chikorita to connect with its Tackle.
Sionna skidded backward but maintained her footing, barely fazed by the physical attack.
"Clever use of Will-O-Wisp," May acknowledged. "Most trainers only see it as a status move to cause burns."
"Sionna's specialty is tactical application of moves," Andrew replied. "Let's show them! Confuse Ray!"
The Vulpix's eyes glowed with an eerie light as disorienting energy orbs formed around Chikorita, circling and pulsing with hypnotic patterns.
"Don't look directly at them, Chikorita!" May warned, but it was too late. The grass-type's movements became unsteady as confusion took hold. "Try to focus! Use Synthesis to recover!"
Chikorita attempted to channel healing energy from the fading evening light, but in its confused state, it couldn't concentrate properly. The move fizzled out ineffectively.
"Now, Sionna, Fire Spin!" Andrew called.
Sionna unleashed a vortex of flames that encircled Chikorita, trapping it in a fiery prison that steadily sapped its strength. The grass-type cried out, the super-effective attack clearly causing significant damage.
"Chikorita, you can do this!" May encouraged. "Use Reflect to reduce the damage!"
Through sheer determination, Chikorita managed to focus enough to create a shimmering barrier that partially deflected the flames, reducing their impact. It was an impressive display of the bond between May and her partner.
"Now break through with Tackle!" May commanded.
In a surprising burst of speed, Chikorita charged through the weakest point of the Fire Spin, accepting some damage to escape the vortex and slam directly into Sionna, who hadn't expected such a bold counter.
Both Pokémon now showed signs of fatigue, but neither was ready to concede. The battle had drawn the attention of a few passersby, who stopped to watch the skillful exchange between the young trainers.
"Sionna, let's finish this! Extrasensory!" Andrew called, deciding to test their newest move in actual battle.
The Vulpix's eyes glowed with psychic energy as she focused on Chikorita, sending a rippling wave of force toward the grass-type. The attack wasn't fully mastered yet—lacking the power it would eventually have—but it was enough to catch May by surprise.
"What? A psychic move from a Vulpix?" she exclaimed as Chikorita was lifted slightly off the ground, disoriented by the unexpected psychic assault.
"Now, Quick Attack into Ember, point-blank!" Andrew followed up.
Sionna darted forward, striking Chikorita while it was still vulnerable from the Extrasensory, then immediately unleashed a concentrated Ember directly at the grass-type before leaping back to a safe distance.
Chikorita wobbled, struggled to stay upright for a moment, then collapsed to the ground with a weak cry.
"Chikorita is unable to battle," called one of the onlookers who had appointed himself referee. "The Vulpix wins!"
May rushed forward to her partner, cradling the exhausted Pokémon in her arms. "You were amazing, Chikorita. I'm so proud of you," she said softly before looking up at Andrew. "That was impressive. I wasn't expecting such sophisticated combinations from a trainer who just started their journey."
Andrew approached with Sionna at his side, feeling slightly guilty for the intensity of their victory. "Your Chikorita is incredibly well-trained," he said sincerely. "That Reflect through confusion was remarkable."
May smiled as she administered a Potion to her partner. "Thanks. We've been working hard on maintaining concentration even under pressure." She studied Sionna with renewed interest. "But your Vulpix... there's something special about her. That Extrasensory caught me completely off guard—it's not a move Vulpix typically learn without special breeding or training."
"Sionna is full of surprises," Andrew replied, giving his partner an affectionate scratch behind the ears. "We've been exploring the limits of conventional move sets."
"Well, it's working," May acknowledged, standing up with a revitalized Chikorita in her arms. The grass-type looked tired but no longer in pain thanks to the Potion's effects. "I think you might give Brendan a run for his money when we meet in Rustboro."
"Speaking of which," Andrew said, "are you still planning to be there in two weeks?"
May nodded. "Definitely. I'll be competing in the Verdanturf Contest first, then heading to Rustboro. What about you? Will you challenge the Gym there?"
"I'm not sure yet," Andrew admitted. "We're still building our strategy and possibly our team. I want to make sure everyone is ready before we take on our first Gym battle."
"A thoughtful approach," May observed. "Most new trainers rush into Gym battles without proper preparation, then wonder why they struggle." She checked her PokéNav for the time. "I should get going—Mom's expecting me for dinner. But I enjoyed our battle!"
"Me too," Andrew agreed. "It was a good test of what we've been training."
They walked together to the Center's entrance, where May bid him farewell with a competitive glint in her eye. "Keep training hard. Next time we battle, the outcome might be different!"
"I'm counting on it," Andrew replied with a smile. "Safe travels to Verdanturf."
After May departed, Andrew returned to the aquatic habitat area to check on Belladonna. The Feebas was floating contentedly near the surface of her pool, but perked up immediately upon seeing Andrew.
"Hey, Bell," he greeted her, kneeling beside the pool. "Sorry you missed the battle with May. She's a skilled trainer—her Chikorita gave Sionna quite the challenge."
Belladonna swam closer to the edge, making soft sounds that seemed to express both interest in his story and slight disappointment at being left out.
"I know," Andrew said, understanding her feelings. "Tell you what—after dinner, we'll find a pond or lake in the city park where we can do some special training just for you. I don't want you to miss out on the training opportunities just because we're in the city."
The Feebas swished her tail happily at this promise, clearly pleased by his consideration.
"For now, rest up and enjoy this facility," Andrew continued. "I'm going to get dinner for everyone, and then we'll have our special training session."
After collecting Sionna and Zephyr, who had been resting in their room, Andrew headed to the Center's cafeteria. The facility offered both human meals and specialized Pokémon food tailored to different types and nutritional needs. Andrew selected a hearty stew for himself and premium food blends for his partners, including a portion for Belladonna that he would bring to her after they ate.
As they dined, Andrew recounted the battle with May to Belladonna, who listened attentively from her portable container that he'd brought to the table.
"May's technique focuses on making the most of Chikorita's natural strengths while mitigating its weaknesses," he explained. "That's something we should all learn from. Each of you has natural advantages and challenges, and our training should acknowledge both."
After finishing their meal and bringing Belladonna's portion to her in the aquatic habitat, Andrew consulted his PokéNav for nearby bodies of water. Sure enough, Petalburg City Park featured a large pond that would be perfect for their evening training session.
"The park closes at ten," Nurse Joy informed him when he asked about it. "So you have about two hours if you're planning to train there."
"That should be plenty of time," Andrew replied. "We just need enough to make sure Belladonna gets her fair share of training."
With Belladonna back in her portable container (which he now viewed as a necessary but temporary solution), Andrew and his team made their way to the city park. The evening was pleasant, with a gentle breeze rustling the trees and the last rays of sunset painting the sky in brilliant oranges and purples.
The pond was located in a quieter section of the park, surrounded by weeping willows and decorative rocks. A few benches faced the water, though they were empty at this hour. Perfect for an undisturbed training session.
"This looks ideal," Andrew said, carefully transferring Belladonna to the pond. "How does it feel? Clean water?"
The Feebas swam in an experimental circle, then nodded her approval. The water was clear and comfortable, with plenty of space for movement.
"Great! Let's focus on your moves first, Bell. I'd like to work on strengthening your Tackle and developing your Water Gun into something more powerful."
Sionna and Zephyr settled on the bank, watching with interest, but Andrew noted a certain restlessness in their behavior. After Belladonna completed her first training exercise—a series of rapid Tackles between markers he'd set in the water—he paused to address his other partners.
"You two seem a bit... bored," he observed. "Would you rather go back to the Center and rest after your battle today?"
Zephyr chirped and fluttered her wings in what seemed like agreement, while Sionna glanced between the Pokémon Center visible in the distance and Belladonna in the pond, clearly torn between rest and supporting her teammate.
Andrew smiled understandingly. "It's okay. You both worked hard today, especially you, Sionna, with that battle against Chikorita. Why don't you head back to our room and get some proper rest? I'll stay here with Bell for a while longer, then join you."
After a moment's hesitation, Sionna nodded, apparently satisfied that this arrangement wouldn't hurt Belladonna's feelings. She nudged Zephyr, and the two began making their way back to the Center, with Sionna pausing once to look back at Andrew as if to make sure he would be alright on his own.
"We'll be fine," he assured her with a wave. "The Center's just across the park. See you soon!"
Once they had departed, Andrew turned his full attention to Belladonna. "Now it's just you and me. Let's work on developing that Water Gun into something stronger—perhaps Water Pulse. It's a more concentrated, powerful water attack that could become one of your signature moves."
The Feebas listened attentively as Andrew explained the technique, demonstrating with hand motions how the water should be compressed into a pulsing orb rather than a straightforward stream.
"The key is pressure and control," he explained. "Gather the water, compress it, then release it all at once with a mental 'push' that creates the pulse effect."
Belladonna's first attempts produced only slightly stronger versions of Water Gun—streams of water with little of the pulsing effect Andrew had described. But she was persistent, trying again and again with determined focus.
"You're getting closer," Andrew encouraged after her tenth attempt showed a slight compression at the stream's end. "Feel the water as an extension of yourself, not just something you push out."
As they continued training, the park grew quieter, with most visitors heading home as evening deepened into night. The lampposts along the pathways automatically illuminated, casting a soft glow over the pond. Andrew checked his PokéNav—they still had about forty minutes before the park would close.
"Let's try a few more times, then head back," he suggested.
Belladonna positioned herself near the center of the pond, concentrating intensely. This time, when she expelled water, there was a noticeable difference—the stream began to form into a pulsing ball about a foot from her mouth before shooting forward with greater force, striking the target rock with enough impact to create a small splash.
"That's it!" Andrew exclaimed. "That was definitely the beginning of Water Pulse!"
The Feebas swam in an excited circle, clearly pleased with her progress. But as she completed her celebratory loop, she suddenly froze, staring at something behind Andrew with an expression of alarm.
Andrew turned quickly, following her gaze. At first, he saw nothing unusual—just the shadowy trees at the pond's edge, their branches swaying gently in the evening breeze. Then he noticed it—a patch of darkness deeper than the surrounding shadows, with a faint outline that seemed to shift and pulse like smoke.
"Is that...?" Andrew whispered, his heart rate accelerating as he recognized the same shadowy presence they had glimpsed in the forest.
The shadow began to move, not toward them but around the edge of the pond, as if positioning itself. There was purpose in its movement, a deliberate quality that sent a chill down Andrew's spine.
"Bell, come here," he called, his voice low and urgent. "We need to leave."
The Feebas began swimming toward him, but she had barely covered half the distance when the shadow suddenly surged forward—not toward Andrew on the bank, but into the water itself, plunging beneath the surface like a dark ink stain spreading through the pond.
"Bell!" Andrew shouted in alarm, dropping to his knees at the water's edge. "Get out of there!"
Belladonna tried to change direction, to swim away from the encroaching darkness, but it moved with unnatural speed, surrounding her in a swirling vortex of shadowy water. Andrew watched in horror as tendrils of darkness began wrapping around the Feebas, pulling her down toward the deeper center of the pond.
Without hesitation, Andrew plunged his arm into the water, reaching for his trapped partner, but the shadow responded by expanding suddenly, engulfing his arm up to the elbow in cold, clinging darkness. A numbing sensation spread through his limb, and he felt himself being pulled forward, as if the shadow intended to drag him fully into the pond.
"Let go!" he shouted, struggling against the powerful force. But the shadow only tightened its grip, pulling him further off balance until his face was inches from the water's surface.
In the murky depths, he could see Belladonna thrashing desperately, fighting against the tendrils that threatened to drag her deeper. Beyond her, within the heart of the shadow, Andrew glimpsed what might have been eyes—cold, glowing points of light filled with malevolent intent.
With a surge of effort, Andrew managed to plant his feet more firmly and resist the pulling force, but he couldn't break free of the shadow's grip. His mind raced—Sionna and Zephyr were too far away to help, and Belladonna was in even more danger than he was.
Then, just as his strength began to wane, a familiar chirping cry sounded from above. Andrew looked up to see Zephyr diving toward them at incredible speed, her wings glowing with metallic energy—Steel Wing, more perfectly executed than in any of their training sessions.
The Pidgey sliced through the shadowy tendrils extending from the water, severing the connection to Andrew's arm. He fell backward onto the bank, gasping as the numbing cold receded from his limb.
"Zephyr! Belladonna's still trapped!" he called, pointing to where his water-type partner continued to struggle beneath the surface.
Without hesitation, Zephyr dove toward the water, her Steel Wing still active as she sliced through the dark vortex surrounding Belladonna. The shadow recoiled from the contact, its form rippling as if in pain.
Taking advantage of this momentary disruption, Belladonna summoned her newfound power—a perfect Water Pulse that erupted from her mouth with stunning force, blasting through the weakened shadow and creating a clear path to the surface.
The Feebas shot upward, breaching the water in a spectacular leap that carried her clear of the pond and onto the grassy bank beside Andrew. Zephyr circled back, landing protectively beside them as they all turned to face the pond.
The shadow was reforming, gathering itself into a more defined shape that rose partially above the water's surface. For the first time, Andrew could make out distinct features—a vaguely humanoid upper body, those same cold, glowing eyes, and what might have been a crimson collar around its neck.
"Is that... Darkrai?" Andrew whispered, recognition dawning as the legendary Pokémon's form became clearer in the lamplight.
The shadow—Darkrai—fixed those unnerving eyes on Andrew for one long, evaluating moment. Then, without warning, it sank beneath the pond's surface and vanished, leaving only gently rippling water as evidence of its presence.
Andrew sat on the bank, cradling his formerly trapped arm, which still tingled uncomfortably. "Are you both okay?" he asked, looking between Zephyr and Belladonna with concern.
The Pidgey chirped an affirmative, though she remained vigilantly scanning the pond and surrounding area. Belladonna nudged against Andrew's leg, trembling slightly but appearing physically unharmed.
"Thank you, both of you," Andrew said, his voice thick with emotion. "Zephyr, how did you know to come back?"
The Pidgey made a series of explanatory chirps and gestures toward Sionna, who was now racing across the park toward them, having evidently sent Zephyr ahead while following as quickly as her shorter legs would allow.
"Sionna sensed something was wrong?" Andrew guessed, receiving a confirming nod from Zephyr.
By the time Sionna reached them, Andrew had gathered Belladonna into his portable container and was preparing to leave. The Vulpix's hackles were raised, her eyes darting around as she searched for the threat she had somehow sensed from afar.
"It was Darkrai," Andrew told her quietly as she pressed against his leg. "At least, I think it was. It tried to drown Bell... and maybe me too."
Sionna's growl was low and fierce, her tails lashing with barely contained anger.
"Let's get back to the Center," Andrew suggested, rising to his feet with Belladonna's container clutched in slightly shaking hands. "I don't think it's coming back tonight, but I don't want to take any chances."
As they hurried across the darkening park, Andrew's mind raced with implications. Darkrai—a legendary Pokémon associated with nightmares and darkness—had directly attacked them. But why? Was this connected to the shadow that had attacked Sionna before she found him? And how had Sionna sensed the danger from such a distance?
Questions without answers swirled in his thoughts, but one thing was certain—the forces opposing their bond were taking more direct action now. What had been watching from the shadows had stepped into the light, revealing itself as something far more dangerous than Andrew had anticipated.
Back in their room at the Pokémon Center, with Belladonna settled in a large basin Andrew had requested from Nurse Joy, the team gathered close together, finding comfort in their proximity after the frightening encounter.
"We need to be more careful," Andrew said softly, stroking Sionna's fur as she maintained her protective position beside him. "No more splitting up, even temporarily. From now on, we stay together at all times."
His Pokémon nodded in solemn agreement, their expressions reflecting a new awareness of the dangers they faced.
"But we also can't live in fear," Andrew continued, his voice growing stronger. "Whatever Darkrai wants, whatever it's trying to prevent by attacking us, we must be on the right path for it to feel threatened."
He looked at each of his partners in turn—Sionna with her otherworldly connection to him, Zephyr with her swift courage that had saved them both, and Belladonna, who had discovered her true power in a moment of desperate need.
"We'll keep training, keep growing stronger together. And we'll face whatever comes our way as a team."
As they settled in for the night, Andrew couldn't shake the image of those cold, glowing eyes rising from the darkness. Darkrai—a legendary Pokémon—had targeted them specifically. Their journey had just become significantly more complicated... and dangerous.
But with danger came purpose. Whatever connection existed between him and Sionna—a connection that now extended to include Zephyr and Belladonna—was significant enough to draw the attention of legendary forces. There was meaning in that, a destiny perhaps, that transcended the simple journey he had originally envisioned.
As sleep finally claimed him, Andrew's last conscious thought was one of determination. They would continue forward, bonds growing stronger with each challenge, each victory, each moment of connection. And perhaps, in time, they would discover why a being of nightmares sought to tear them apart.
Across the city, in the now-deserted park, the pond's surface rippled once more as a dark shape briefly emerged. Darkrai gazed in the direction of the Pokémon Center, those cold eyes narrowed in what might have been frustration or calculation.
The boy was proving more resilient than expected, his bond with the Vulpix stronger than anticipated. And now he was gathering others, forming connections that strengthened his presence in this world.
It would require a new approach. Direct confrontation had failed twice now. Perhaps it was time to work through others—humans whose ambitions could be shaped to serve Darkrai's purpose.
With this thought, the legendary Pokémon sank once more beneath the surface, not to attack, but to plan. The night absorbed its presence, leaving no trace of the shadow that moved with purpose through the darkness of Petalburg City.
