An Epic Speech
Added 2022-10-08 19:40:09 +0000 UTCSomething I've been wanting to address for a while now is this idea that we - even atheists - have and need a "Christian moral framework" upon which our very society is based. Sadly, I've seen even atheists (usually right-of-center atheists) express this idea. I've read countless articles published about this and have seen influential figures like Jordan Peterson express this idea. They think that with the decline of Christianity, there will be "nothing to replace it with" and our society will fall apart. That is 180 degrees from the truth, as proven by the progress of secular societies in contrast with their highly religious counterparts. It's like these people are dedicated to a narrative rather than just opening their eyes and looking at reality. In fact, as we've seen a recent revival of Christian nationalism, we've seen more extremism, demands to remove more liberties, more bigotry, more open hostility, and a generally LESS stable society.
The speech I wrote to address this is probably the most satirical thing I've ever written. I typically wouldn't refer to my own work as "epic" but since it's satirical, it's okay. The speech goes through the long history of how great the world was as this wonderful Christian moral framework developed and spread around the globe and contrasts it with how awful modernity is in comparison. I've written far more serious rebuttals to this idea, but I don't think those sting quite like a good satirical piece can. So, that's the direction I've decided to go with it.
I just have one more problem to resolve. What should the visual aspect be? I could do my usual cartoon style, which would take a while. It could be more of a slideshow, which shouldn't take too long. Or it could just be the audio itself, which would be the fastest. In the end, the audio is what's most important; it's the heart of the content. If I can think of some funny visuals to go along with it, then that could help, but I don't think it will change the overall message. I thought about doing it in the style of another PragerU video, or even an actual Jordan Peterson impression, but wondered if going after specific people would distract from the message.
A genuine laugh is sort of involuntary. That's usually how I decide whether to go through with a project, if I audibly laugh while writing it. I did laugh many times while writing this one.
On a side note, I turned 46-years-old today, which feels strange to me. I don't feel like I've been alive that long. It's going by too fast. So, I've been telling everyone to refer to my age as 23x2. Sadly, it's not having the desired effect.
Thanks, everyone, for your continued support. Being able to do these projects for a living has helped cause these years to be some of the best years of my life (despite getting old) and YOU are the people who have made that possible for me. I don't think I'll ever be able to adequately express my gratitude for that.
