Is Physical Media Dead?

Thanks, Chris!

That's something, at least!

For what it’s worth, Barnes and Noble has said they’ll still carry physical media next year (which makes sense since that’s a good chunk of what they sell in the first place). It’s good to know that the place where I get my Criterion Collection stuff (when it goes on sale, of course, being an in-debt millennial) is still going to keep that stuff around for a while, at least.

I always appreciate your content, especially the riffed shorts. Good comments here

I buy music much more than movies or TV shows, but I'll ignore the topic of music for this. When it comes to movies or TV shows, I buy from iTunes and some on DVD or blu-ray. While I'll often go with Amazon if I'm buying a DVD or blu-ray, I cannot remember the last time I received a blu-ray in a broken case. But there are so many ways that the quality of shopping has become worse at Amazon that I do tend to look around before buying from them. One perhaps-odd reason I prefer to buy a DVD instead of a digital download is that I can *get rid* of it if I don't like it. I bought the R-rated version of "Trading Places" thinking that it was R-rated just because one of the characters was a prostitute. Nope. It's R-rated because it includes a totally worthless scene which serves absolutely no purpose to the *story* than to force it into an R-rating. I'd like to just sell or give it away to someone else, but there it sits in my collection for all-time. There are some other movies I've bought based on a vague memory of liking it back in my teens or 20's, only to find out I was something of an idiot back in my teens and 20's. If you continue to buy CD's and DVD's for many decades, the space taken up by physical media gets to be a drag. So there is still some stuff I buy as digital downloads, while others where I'll want to own the physical media. So my guess is that physical media will never be as big as it used to be, but I also hope that it won't completely fade away.

That's all great stuff!

I still push to have physical media for anything I really want to maintain access to. I have had a few times where I bought something electronically where it disappeared eventually because of rights or other media management.

As an even older Gen-Xer, I still buy a lot of physical media, but usually for older or more obscure titles. I recently got the Blu-ray from Criterion for Tod Browning's Sideshow Shockers (Freaks/The Unknown/The Mystic), but also frequent Severin Films and Vinegar Syndrome (all online) for their latest Blu-ray compilations. I used to buy a lot of DVDs from Something Weird as well, but they seemed to pivot to downloads and the occasional DVD-R with the death of their founder. However, they've had something of a resurgence since their collaborative Blu-ray releases with the American Genre Film Association.
