DariaPlays Podcast Questions!

Hello everyone! On next week's podcast we're going to have DariaPlays on with us! If you haven't seen her channel you can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ697qvWdKOUmXuvslxNzPg

I especially liked her "SNES fan's guide to Genesis RPGs". Anyway, ask us some good questions with her in mind for next week's podcast!

Why do you think SE has studios doing Setsuna/Lost Sphear (IMO, low budget quickly made JRPGs) and Bravely series/Octopath? What are their goals with these two different types of games?

Just to add to your question Squarehard, there was a game released last year called "Unholy Knight: The Darkness Hunter" by a company called Retroism. It is a fighting game for the SNES. That's right, a new release for the SNES, in 2017. Very interesting. https://www.amazon.com/Retroism-Unholy-Night-Darkness-Compatible-nintendo/dp/B06Y3RB65T

I just came across the game "40 Winks" on Kickstarter, which is a game being developed for the N64. No, not a game in the STYLE of an N64 game, but an actual N64 game that comes on an N64 cartridge and can be played on an N64. Apparently stretch goals also allow backers to select PS One or Dreamcast versions of the game as well. I'll be honest, I haven't looked into the game play itself at all, but I am curious about your take on this kind of experiment. As a channel that focuses quite a bit on retro games, what do you think of developers creating games for older consoles? Is there any real value to this or is it just a gimmick? Why retro games?

This may not be a question you guys consider pertinent to this podcast specifically, but with the latest Nintendo direct announcing 3DS games coming out into 2019, what do you guys consider the purpose of a system like the 3ds alongside the switch. I see a lot of people complaining about the two coexisting, but I personally don't mind at all, and think that nintendo has been effectively developing differently styled games for both.

So this is actually my first podcast question, so i thought id keep it simple, what is your favorite battle system in rpgs? Or if you dont have a favorite, what would be your ideal one? What keeps you engaged? My personal favorite is the tales of series, specifically tales of xillia 2. Theres so much control with the character you play and its really dynamic, i feel like im really there.

“Tent-pole” franchises: Set-up: Many game companies have franchises that are relied on to sell many copies and reach a wide audience for the company. These games are often given a large budget and long development time in order to be high quality and hopefully build loyalty between the customer and company/brand over a long period of time. For Nintendo these would be the Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon franchises. For Square Enix, it’s Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest. Questions: What game or series that is currently not a tent-pole franchise (For example: Pikmin, F-Zero, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Mana Series, etc.) do you think has the most potential to break out into the next blockbuster success for a game company? And what changes do you think would need to be made to that game/series in order to reach that mainstream success? This question was inspired by Monster Hunter World’s recent break out success in the west. I'm wondering what game series you think might be "the next big thing" to blow up into the mainstream.

I posted this question on Youtube, but I'd better post it here too. Question: You guys talk about JRPGS a lot, but I know you all LOVE Nintendo, especially the Legend of Zelda. Could the three of you do your ranking of the Legend of Zelda series. Start with least favorite and move all the way up to your favorite title in the series. If you want and have time, go ahead and do this for FF too.

Where exactly do you draw the lines of division between RPGs and other genres of game? For example, I often refer to Breath of the Wild as an RPG due to it's combination of having a fantasy setting, its inventory stat system, the player's choice between "leveling up" health or stamina, and its high level of freedom that allows you to play Link however you wish. I know this is a minority opinion, and many "gatekeepers" of RPGs regularly scoff at those who "confuse" Zelda games for RPGs, but should this be the case? Similarly, a friend of mine said recently that his favorite RPG was Shadow of the Colossus, and I didn't have the heart to correct him. To him, and I think a lot of players outside of our more niche RPG and JRPG communities, the term "RPG" just means "a game with a fantasy-like setting and deep story or world building." While I don't agree with this definition completely, for example there are plenty of RPGs without a fantasy setting, what's wrong with broadly including games like Breath of the Wild or Shadow of the Colossus under the RPG umbrella? I don't think it would be hard to make the case that those games have more in common with Final Fantasy and Dragon Age than they do Call of Duty or FIFA. So I am very interested to see where you think the lines of division should be drawn or if they should be drawn at all. Thanks!

I do like her videos, and I think it's cool you guys are having her on. Her last video was good..i did personally play more saga then snes. I would ask if she had any thought on lunar silver star story for saga cd or if she plans on doing any videos for that system or the games for it?

I will put in more of a fun question. Is there any movie you watch old or new and you asked yourself if this would of worked better as a video game? Vise versa. Are there any games you played and thought this would work much better as a movie? Not in a means to criticize cutscene length or presentation in games. Just like something you think would work better as a 2 hour movie.
