My Secret Recipe for Expressive Characters: 3 Quick Tips for Artists

Hi there! it's been a while since I write about one of the most distinctive and attractive themes from my artwork, face expression, today I wanted to briefly share the best of what I've wrote so far as consice and straightforward as possible, for you to apply to your art today! let's dive in:

Tip 1: Observe and break down expressions into simple shapes. Study real faces, photos, or mirrors to note eyes, brows, and mouth nuances. Simplify complex emotions into basic lines (e.g., wide smile for excitement, furrowed brows for sorrow). Apply immediately by sketching one emotion using memes or animation as guides. For more, check Express Yourself: Mastering Facial Expressions for Emotionally Engaging Art

Tip 2: Focus on eyes for emotion, use pupil size, eyebrow position, and shape. Small pupils convey shock; raised brows show surprise. Avoid overload: add one hard-edged highlight between iris and pupil for realism. Practice by drawing both eyes together, flipping canvas for symmetry. See Making Eyes! 4 Essential Tips to Address Common Mistakes

Tip 3: Combine expression with colors and values for momentum. Close eyebrows to eyes for intensity; open mouth with separated teeth for shock. Use desaturated colors around focal points (e.g., red blood on blue/purple) and top lighting for drama. Test on a sketch with high contrast. I hope it helps!, thank you for your support.

Update about Pinterest

TL;DR: Due to ongoing issues with Pinterest, I’m moving to Raindrop to share curated reference collections (Shape References, Costume References, Food & Tool References, Environment References).

Why the Switch from Pinterest? Pinterest flagged my boards as "unwelcome," hiding pins from many users. Despite my requests for specific feedback, their responses have been vague, with no clear resolution timeline. While I’m grateful for Pinterest’s past inspiration, I can’t wait indefinitely, so I’m transitioning to Raindrop for now.

What is Raindrop? Raindrop is a simple platform to privately upload, save, and share reference collections. Just create a free account to access the links I'll be sending via Patreon.

How to Access the Links? If you’re currently subscribed to any tier with access to my Pinterest boards, check your Patreon DMs, I just sent you the access links.

.

Lastly, remember you can now pre-order my book Life in Every Sketch on the 3DTotal shop.

Please let me know if you have any questions, I’ll be happy to help with art advice or book details.
