I won't argue about the whole idea of taking land and people, but I'm fairly certain when Rick says they need Hershel it isn't for the actual land, but for the medical skills Hershel himself provides. Mind you, he IS the whole reason Carl even survived in the first place. Though I guess that's obvious now since this was many months ago.
