Maybe a hot take, but, I don't think there is a hard set rules for age gap relationships. I think it's fully a case by case basis of judgement. Like, the example in the show, the only thing that personally gives me pause about it is the fact she's a student at the same university he teaches at, not the age gap itself, not based on the evidence given so far. That can change as I watch more, I haven't rewatched these in a while

Also will say just to dispute some people that age gaps weren't less of an issue in the 90s and early 2000s, they definitely were. Hence why they make an issue of it in the episode! Though I will disagree that Monica's was worse than Ross's because the guy she dated lied to Monica and said he was was a senior in college which is 22, and she was like 25 at the time. Then when she found out he was in high school, her first response was "ew" she instantly ended it, while Ross is actively beginning and continuing a relationship with full knowledge or her age. Also he's in a position of power over her, being a teacher. Unless you meant like, Monica's was worse writing wise to have her in that situation rather than decision wise because I think Monica did the right hing instantly ending it once she learned it was inappropriate, while Ross doubled down upon learning that.

Love your take on Ross dating a student! Some older Friends fans might not have the same opinion but for me it's clear Ross knows it crosses a line and that's what makes it bad. Also her not being old enough to drink alcohol! Come on Ross...

I think Monica is overly jealous here. They went on one date it's not like they dated for months/years. As for the whole age gap thing. I honestly think Ross being a professor is more potentially predatory than the age gap thing on it's own. Monica and Richard and Pheobe's brother and his wife are both way bigger gaps than Ross and the student.

I love the Unagi episode. Everyone's story gives me laugh out loud moments. It's ridiculous but one of the most consistently funny episodes. Ross having a breakdown because he can't scare Rachel and Phoebe is so much fun. I like seeing Monica get jealous. A lot of times the joke is that Chandler is dating above his status with Monica, so it's fun to see her be a little territorial with him. I also love the Ross dating a student only because it keeps the pattern alive where you get annoyed with Ross, he starts to win you back, then he does something that annoys you again. So I love that this episode had him give you the ick!

The age gap is kind of icky, but I guess it was less of a concern in the 90’s/early 2000’s. Hopefully, you enjoy her as a supporting character enough to overlook the questionable situation.
