Scraps - Twice the Fun
Added 2019-07-12 23:48:53 +0000 UTC“So… two?” Rebecca asked with a baffled face. Her wife, Emily, shared a similar expression while Evie, their longtime mutual friend -- and surrogate mother of their child -- nodded enthusiastically.
“Yeah!” Evie remarked loudly, her voice full of authentic excitement. “Twin boys! Can you believe it?” She sighed, almost wistfully, before chuckling to herself. “Oh, this is going to be so much different than it was with Bree.”
“That’s all well and good,” Emily said, closing her eyes and waving Evie off as if that would bring her back to a clean slate. “But, um, we’re having two kids?” Emily looked at Rebecca, panic rising in her eyes. “We can’t have two kids! That changes everything!”
“Welp,” Evie said with an over the top sigh before pushing herself up and out of the easy chair next to the sofa where the girls sat. “I can’t just take one back to the stork now, Emily. You’re stuck with them. Sorry ‘bout that.”
Emily watched Evie leave, her mouth working wordlessly. Rebecca only sighed next to her wife. She knew that this was not in the plans and that it did indeed change everything, but Evie was right, they couldn’t do anything about it now.
“It’ll be okay, Emmy,” Rebecca said, putting a hand on her wife’s shoulder to make the blonde face her. “We’ll just double up on everything.”
“Obviously,” Emily scoffed, as if this was a no brainer. “I’m not worried about that. We can take care of that.”
“Um, okay,” Rebecca muttered, her brows pulling together in a hard furrow. “I’m confused as to what the problem is…”
“The problem is that there’s two, Becca!” Emily exclaimed with a disgruntled huff.
Rebecca rubbed the back of her neck and looked toward the ground, her expression thoughtful. “Well, yeah. I thought that was pretty clear when Evie said twins.”
Emily swung her legs over on the coach so her whole body was facing Rebecca just before she stared at her wife with a tight jaw. “This ruins the arrangement that we had.”
Rebecca breathed out a sigh and threw Emily a pitiful gaze. “I’m lost.”
“I became a Knox in exchange for our first born’s name.” Emily’s glare sharpened on Rebecca. “Remember?”
“I thought you became a Knox because I proposed and,” Rebecca shrugged, “I dunno, ‘cause you love me?”
“Don’t kid yourself, Becca,” Emily said with a wave of her hand. After seeing the hurt look on Rebecca’s face, however, she stopped and backtracked. “I mean, of course I love you. I just meant that we had a deal.”
“Well,” Rebecca drawled, “we did. But it sounds like we’ll need to comprise now.”
Emily growled in her throat and Rebecca smiled. It never failed to make her smile when the little blonde got riled up. Not getting her way was the number one way to get Emily all riled up too.
“It’s not ideal…” Emily trailed off with another little growl.
“But you have no other choice,” Rebecca finished for her wife, the smile loud and proud in her voice.
Emily’s eyes narrowed at the brunette. “Don’t act so smug. Bitch.”
“Mm,” Rebecca hummed and leaned over to kiss Emily’s neck. “Keep talking to me like that. You know what it does to me.”
Emily was not having it though. “Knock it off,” she muttered and pushed Rebecca’s shoulder back. “This is serious.”
“You know what else it is?” Rebecca asked, the smile still present on her face despite Emily’s grumpy mood.
“What?” Emily snapped, refusing to meet Rebecca’s gaze.
“It’s something that we have about five or six months to argue over until we get it right. Can’t we just be excited about the news?” Rebecca asked, nudging Emily’s shoulder with her own.
“What for two babies? That’s double the trouble, Becca,” Emily stated astutely. “Double the diapers and formula and clothes and don’t even get me started on doctors bills. Not to mention,” she threw another pointed stare at Rebecca, “knowing our luck, they won’t live on the same schedule no matter how hard we try and, ugh, God!” Emily shook her head with a dramatic sigh.
“Yeah. All that.” Rebecca sighed and smiled softly. “Everything we wanted,” she said and slid her hand into Emily’s.
“Holy shit,” Emily breathed, her eyes slowly pulling from the ground to look at Rebecca with sudden astonishment. “We’re gonna be parents.”
“To two boys apparently,” Rebecca added with a chuckle.
Emily laughed and shook her head before letting out a ragged sigh. Everything was overwhelming now that the irritation was simmering off. The reality was more than she expected when it came crashing into her.
“I don’t even know how to feel now,” Emily muttered and looked at Rebecca helplessly.
“Neither do I.” Rebecca shrugged and smiled pleasantly. “That’s okay though. I’m just letting everything hit me right now.”
“Hm,” Emily hummed and leaned her body against Rebecca’s side. After a few moments of sitting there quietly, nothing but the breaths between them breaking the silence, Emily looked up at Rebecca and asked, “What do you think of Marcus? I’ve always liked that name.”
Rebecca’s smile grew as she kissed the top of Emily’s blonde head. “We could call him Marc.”
“Mm, yeah… Just so you know though, I reserve the right to change this at any time. As per the agreement and all,” Emily said and settled her head back on Rebecca’s shoulder. “But it’s the first option I’m putting out.”
“Of course,” Rebecca said, not even hiding the amusement in her voice over Emily’s legalistic explanation.
Emily nodded, mostly to herself and then looked back up to Rebecca coyly. “You like Marcus though, right?”
“Mm-hm. I really do,” Rebecca hummed and squeezed Emily into her side. “Now what are we gonna call his brother?”
Emily opened her mouth and then shut it again. Her face went puzzled, brows scrunching into a tight line over her eyes and lip pouting out in contemplation before she let out a long hum. Rebecca found all of this utterly adorable.
“God, I don’t know,” Emily finally groaned, burying her face against Rebecca once more. “But we’ve got like six months to figure that out. I’ll worry about it later.”
“You know,” Rebecca said, her voice taking on an amused air as she spoke. “Those were my thoughts exactly.”
Emily frowned a little. “You are so smug when you’re right.”
“Mm-hm,” Rebecca hummed and leaned in to touch her lips to Emily’s. Rebecca pulled back after a moment and nudged her nose against Emily’s before setting her wife with a cheeky smile. “Now what were you saying about me being a bitch earlier?”
