Big Direction Change Discussion – Daydream Single Player vs Multiplayer

Hey everyone,

I’ve been having a lot of debates lately about Daydream, specifically whether it should be a single-player story game instead of multiplayer. If you didn’t know, Daydream was originally supposed to be multiplayer, but as the fanbase has grown, I’ve seen how much people want in-depth lore.

Here’s the thing: in multiplayer, the trade-off is that you get the friends and fun, but a lot less lore. That’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while, until I woke up today and thought, I’m scared that if it’s a story-mode game, people wouldn’t buy it! At the same time, I think this game can expand deeper into its own thing, and I can see it having way more lore to explore.

Another big factor is time. Multiplayer would probably take an extra year and a half to get done. But with single-player, I was thinking I could work on something that’s around an hour and a half long as a starting point, and then build off of that, either dropping more updated content or adding on free of charge. I’m not really a fan of DLCs or microtransactions; honestly, I think they’re stupid, lol.

The biggest thing in all of this is funding, and this Patreon helps a lot. What I wish I could do is release a story-mode version first, then use those funds to reinvest back into the game through feedback, bug fixes, and adding more content. Obviously, I wouldn’t put out a rushed pre-release. It would be fully optimized and polished before launch.

Please, everyone, let me know your thoughts on this. This would completely change the direction of Daydream, and I want to hear what you all think before making a decision.

I’d prefer single player but def intrigued for multiplayer. Lore is definitely important, more people will be interested in the game. You’d create an even bigger fan base

make the game 6 player multiplayer. I only play games that are multiplayer with my friends and they gain a lot more traction

I think it would be an incredible game as a single player game first. Then work up to a multiplayer mode maybe later.

I would wish for multiplayer, personally just playing multiplayer games. That's was an big pro for me, that I saw it goes multiplayer :)

Daydream would be amazing as a singleplayer solo story game. It would play well similar to the liminal space walking sims but youd have extra things in it to do

but the thing is daydream is not a hallucination

Here's the thing about Daydream: everything you've shown up until now has implications - it doesn't need lore the same way Tolkien's novels had lore, because it's all meant to be confusing, vague, and up to interpretation. I think by adding lore you add structure that will detract from the overall experience. I would rather have a shared hallucination than a weird but explained story.
