Why These Beetles Hump Bottles

This beetle is trying to mate with a beer bottle. And in fact, he's dedicated enough to the task that he may get so dehydrated that he dies doing it. Which seems like really dumb behavior… but don’t be too quick to judge, because there’s something MUCH deeper going on here.

Why These Beetles Hump Bottles

Comments

The bird is a song sparrow - which is a common little bird known for it's songs. I spent years studying how they use their songs (how they assemble them, what they are communicating when they sing - that sort of stuff), making field recordings and doing experiments every spring. To this day, I will hear song sparrows in tv shows and movies and always perk up when I hear them. Sometimes, it is completely out of context, which I always find funny. Like, the worst one is in Skyrim, when you are near Windhelm and the song sparrow sound effect plays when you are in a literal snowstorm. As for the bike, that is actually my mountain bike, and Ever drew me with it. It is a red Trek Excalibur 8 hardtail if you are curious. I spend a lot of my free time trail riding on it, and I do the occasional mountain bike race. Anyway, I hope that wasn't more information than you asked for! Cheers, Cameron

What is that bird on the bike in the opening? Does it hold a special meaning?
