Some BTS (Aurora) - And a question for YOU

I feel like not cutting as much or having a ton of b-roll, you guys get to see a little bit more of the candid process as we do these "explain to Levi" videos. I actually do learn all the science on the spot, and we usually record for too many HOURS because we can't stop talking about it. Anyways, hope you enjoy us chatting about the Aurora, and some footage of it we captured.
Complete change of subject - It has been officially a couple weeks since I was informed Dianna won't be returning for a while, and the channel will be different. Though I'm still doing my own stuff on Long Covid to hopefully share Dianna's experience, you might be able to tell a lot of my time has also been spent showcasing Dianna's old content and posting it.
There has been mixed feed-back on how whether reception from audience is positive or negative. But I guess, it's mostly supportive. I'd like to ask your guys's opinions on how it's been affecting you as a subscriber. Is it potentially interesting to see "best moments" from Dianna's videos and to see other new audiences join in? Or does it feel spammy? Like corporate recycling of old content because she clearly can't be around? Is old content a problem? Would it be helpful if a lot of the content didn't appear in old videos? A.K.A. unseen Dianna content, (That content is limited, but there is science education content that have been cut from videos). Is it interesting to see old forgotten moments? Or maybe ones you missed as a subscriber? Or anything I didn't think of?

I think the content should be a MIXTURE of things, that way nobody gets too put off and we keep everyone on board. : - shorts are probably a neccesary "evil", youtube love them and they make money, so extracts from her old work- with a RETRO subtitle, as others have suggested - rerelease her old work with RETRO, but try to find an angle of a few minutes from Levi or someone adding to each one. - FOLLOW ON work- Show highlights of her episodes, where Levi can work with other friends of hers and/or OTHER creators, eg Derek/Veritassium or Action Lab to go beyond what she has so far done. That way its kind of her, but also NEW. - We would love to see a couple of videos about her life elsewhere, talk to her mum and maybe teachers etc about her journey to become Physics Girl. - Yes, Making Of, videos are a no-brainer- unseen stuff, Interview Levi. - An occasional video about the medicine involved, not just about Dianna personally, but about Long Covid and other relevent things.

I recall the uploaded video had a few “side jaunts to Levi” and I think of those as commenter bubbles on a Microsoft Word document being read by several people. I would love to see any additional info she may have shared that hit the edit block? Also, do you have any more footage of seeing CERN? I am so jealous that she got to make that stunning trip to Switzerland.

I do think however you should cut/paste your edit and send it to YouTube instead as feedback.

It seems like a YouTube problem not a Physics Girl problem that it messes up your feed. There are other channels that I subscribe to that chop up old content for shorts and I don't get annoyed with them for doing it I just get annoyed with YouTube that they don't let me control that I don't want to see any shorts.

But I really don't like my feed being clutted by old content in this terrible tiktok format. edit for more elaboration: I'm subscribed to something like 150 youtube channels. The vast majorty educational content in the 20 minutes range with well reserched in-depth content. That's what I've subscribed for and I rely on my youtube subscription feed to keep track of when new content is posted. And for years I've managed to keep a very clean feed which is almost exclusivly content that I'd actually want to watch. This changed for the worse when youtube introduced shorts, which simply isn't a format I'm interessted in. Apart from a few exceptions, like minute physics, there is just no content I enjoy that fits into a 5 minutes or less video, so I generally won't subscribe to channels that post videos like that. But now more and more great youtube channels have decided to mix their main content with these shorts, be it personal updates, behind the scences stuff or ... well, literally ads for old content. And youtube doesn't offer any options to selectivly subscribe to specific formats. So I'm left with either unsubscribing or have my main feed become a scrollfest of hit-and-miss content. I get that the youtube algorithm is harsh for creators of quality content, that's the main reason I'm on patreon. So creators don't have to resort to the latest gimmicks and trends to keep youtube happy.

I don't like the "reels" or whatever those super short videos are because it is hard to tell when they were published or anything much about them. YouTube will often surface videos she made 3-4 years ago. That's fine, but I've typically already seen it. So, I just want to make sure I'm starting to watch a video I haven't seen before, however old the actual source is. I'll rewatch certain videos on purpose, too.

You've both been honest with us about how she's doing, which makes all the difference. It's not like she's "ghosted" us and is just posting old, unpolished stuff. <3 If you're doing youtube shorts, bits from older videos is totally fine - I see a lot of channels doing that. We just want her to get better but also not lose her entire youtube career. /hugs

I mean, you don't hear anything when you're viewing it from the ground. As for your questions about content and stuff during Dianna's absence, I'm fine just riding it out for awhile, whether you're putting out BTS-type content or not. I do like the side content so far. I like that it's in smaller pieces, since those are easier to watch quickly when I have a few minutes free, and I like the variety. I would mainly prefer unseen content, but it's not bad to pepper it with little bits we _have_ seen before. I prefer not overdoing it, though. Again, you haven't overdone it at all so far, so this isn't intended as a polite hint; it's more just hoping it does stay interesting and good quality. I wouldn't try to put out the amount of content you do in full production mode -- again, these short segments are nice, and I don't think they need to be more frequent because they're shorter. I'd also prefer no content to content that isn't interesting or drags things out too long -- i.e., quality, not quantity -- but what you've put out the last couple weeks has absolutely been fine. Get well soon, Dianna! (Not for the sake of the channel, but just because, you know, you're a person, and I hope you beat this thing soon!)

For that reason, we give our support through patreon not only for the content she creates, but just because we love the fact that someone like Dianna is out there in the world, creating content that offers so much; entertainment, knowledge, education, on and on and on. If she's down and out from Covid, good grief, the last thing any of us wants to do is pull the plug on our financial support. In fact, this is ALL THE MORE REASON to offer support. We don't support just her content. We support HER. Do what you need to do, Dianna. Take the time you need to take. What we would want for our support (spiritual and financial) to achieve is the sense of making our own feeble contribution to the greater good through our avatar: Dianna.

The main thing I do like to see is anything which gives a slight status update, basically to know that Diana is "still alive" (metaphorically as well as literally :-), and your little BTS posts and messages do that.

But honestly I'm here more to show my support than for content. While I've been a Patreon supporter for a bit of time now, she's been doing so much for so long that this is just my way of continuing to show my appreciation for what she's done since I joined and what she's done long before I joined. I'm here for the long haul.

On anoter note, is the audio of the aurora that Dianna recorded produced by actual pressure waves through the air or some EMI in the microphone?

I wasn't a Patreon supporter before I heard she was dealing with long Covid. I joined specifically to give her and the channel a bit of support until she's able to resume (and of course I will continue afterwards). I've always enjoyed the content and I look forward to whenever you're able to do more.

Specifically, I don't think "Best of..." videos feel "spammy", but I don't want you to feel that you *must* spend the time to generate such content. BTS videos are always interesting, but I do tend to watch short videos immediately, while longer videos are added to my "To Watch - Science" playlist and then consumed periodically when I find time.

Making shorts out of old content until she's up to making new content feels fine to me, but I've got little interest in compilations/best of's as longer videos. On the other hand, I am interested in behind the scenes and footage from the cutting room floor that was only cut for time/pacing reasons, which could link back to the originals.

I think picking small sections out of videos and recycling them as stand alone short form content is great. Not everyone has time for the full videos. But may have time for bits and pieces. The riddle videos would be good ones to do this with. Put the riddle in one short vid and the answer in a 2nd.
