Before I got studied 3D modeling the second step of my usual drawing process could be described as:
-spending tons of time on good references search;
-success (??) If not, then making references myself, lol;
-figuring out human anatomy peculiarity, shades/lights spreading, having troubles if the pose should be changed for some reason.
Now most of these difficulties are getting solved by building 3D models. I still have a bunch of things to learn, but for now I feel that the bases are already so helpful in my everyday work that I can't understand how I used to work without them during all these years, lol.
If you're an artist, or learning how to draw, I definitely recommend you to study 3D to make your drawing routine easier. I wish someone convinced me to try it a long time before I got to this idea myself!
