SHHG! Episode 20: Seasonal Attack Pea

Catching Fire chapters 16-17

We're still not at the Hunger Game. It sure seems like we're running out of book, but instead of duking it out in the arena our heroes are still meeting their foes and/or potential allies. Are Katniss and Peeta building a heist team, or are they just going to fight all these guys? We've got lots to discuss about this and more, but first we also have some Neopets updates, strings drama, and dental work to discuss!

(If you're not a fan of dentist anxieties/horror stories, you can start the episode at 9:20!)

also now that i've finished the episode i have to add: this brought up long forgotten memories of being in 9th grade Lit and doing the song lyrics presentation on Numb by Linkin Park. My teacher basically roasted me in front of the entire class for not understanding that it was about drug addiction. I was a naive and somewhat sheltered kid and that really fucked me up at the time but now this memory is 100% hilarious.

my dentist used to give out coupons for free chicfila waffle fries cause they didn't wanna give out candy. the choice of restaurant was unfortunate but I would love if dentists everywhere started giving out coupons for like a free French fry or a free coffee from a local coffee shop or something

Just popping in here to share a games industry newsletter with an article about a Quest64 Twitter account https://www.pushtotalk.gg/p/one-mailmans-quest-to-save-an-old

this ep had me laughing thinking about choosing Paradise by Coldplay for the analyse a song assignment when I was 13 and thinking I was so cool

Hey all, I'm gonna have to stop my subscription. You know those internet horror stories that are like 'I was fired via email'? well dear penthouse, it happened to me, after someone called my line asking me to verify that the Indeed ad for my position was real! Anyway, just wanted to thank u guys for always providing thoughtful & funny content. I'll miss the member perks but I'll be back as soon as 2024 shifts back in my financial favor. :)

on the subject of the songs in english class i had a teacher who was like the tiniest wee old lady but for the poetry unit for highers always handed around printouts of poems with no atribution and would ask everyone who wrote it and it was 2pac

When I was in high school, we did a similar assignment where we had to analyze songs, but we didn't get to choose; the teacher chose for us, and I swear he deliberately chose songs that he knew we didn't normally listen to. As the palest kid in class, I was assigned "Gangster's Paradise" by Coolio. Was a fun experience, though.

I'm gonna say it because I don't think it's a spoiler - morphling is morphine. Like, that's the joke, it's the future so it's got a slightly corrupted name. "Morphling" as a term for the addicts, meanwhile, I guess is derived from words like "changeling" and "underling"?

when i was in high school we did the "bring in a song" thing as part of our course material on metaphors. so we had to bring in a song that had a strong metaphor that we could discuss with the class after playing it. for some reason i had a really really difficult time with this but finally settled on "dust in the wind"

Seconding NTA. As a former string musician, the only times I've seen copyright issues with passing around music I've been pretty explicitly warned by the conductor not to photocopy or lose my copy of the music. We played a couple of Broadway musicals and those have very strict copyright rules, for example. If your group decides to play the piece publicly, it seems like it'd be a good idea to pay for it but that sounds like something for your director to sort out.

I'm going to make, "I don't think that's a skill—It's a kink," part of my active vocabulary now, thank you

Cutey! Candy!! Cataclysm!!!

also, my 9th grade english teacher wanted to make our poetry unit relatable so she would just throw modern music in there sometimes. we had to write an essay on how charge of the light brigade compares and contrasts with 21 guns

dianthus

really excited to see you guys get further into the hunger games because, post-jk rowling, the hunger games has kind of risen up as the new “this is the ya series that teaches you all about revolutionary leftism” and i honestly havent read it recently enough to know how much of that is true

dianthus

Bohemian Rhapsody was also present

Kzinssie

oh my god

The Shrieking Shack

If we're talking about insane school assignments, during my middle school unit on the Holocaust (pause for effect) they had us burn a CD with like, a Holocaust-themed mixtape or playlist or whatever, like we had to find a bunch of songs with lyrics that connected to the fucking Holocaust. For years I had as one of my cringe secrets that I put Open Your Heart from Sonic Adventure on there but then when I finally opened up to someone about it and said it out loud I realized the assignment itself was way more insane, like there's nothing you could put on there that isn't cringe

Kzinssie

I do hope this is something that calls back to Chicago (2003). If so, agreed.

Joshua Smith

You could try your local library for sheet music

Lea Schmidt

Oh my god I loved Little Black Backpack as a teen! Stroke 9 was also my first concert 💀💀💀

Loved this episode, but I do want to weigh in the AITA debate. I definitely wouldn't say YTA but as someone who lives in a house whose income is derived solely from IP (me in publishing, my SO in music), generally lax attitudes to copyright and licensing feeds into a general entitlement to creative output. It seems small, but it's all part of a larger devaluing that the arts have undergone in recent decades. If it's worth playing/watching/reading, it's worth paying for. And if you don't want to pay for it, you don't automatically have a right to use it 💁

Liz is so much stronger than me if i handed someone something and they said "is this normal?" I would simply pass away

Commander Freddy

Shortly after the first Hunger Games episode I went searching for the knock-off girl power dystopia I wrote in middle school after reading it - couldn't find it all but I DID find an assignment where I had to write an opinion piece from Effie's POV. You were right on the money about the analyzing themes bait lol.

GroceryStorePhobic

freshman year of high school we read the hunger games and our big paper for the unit was writing a extra chapter of the book. i remember someone got in trouble for turning in their own fanfic that theyd published already lol

gothbeyonce

I assumed the building was just newer and they had gotten cocky when designing it, still kinda dumb though

Zachary Coleman

Don’t worry guys, Peeta does something very funny very soon. A top moment in the series for me

Marisa

reposting this from the previous ep because I found it so late you might not have seen it i found an extremely cursed classic shriekcast style article for the hunger games catching fire movie. The last 3 paragraphs are actually incredible, it doesn’t have any specific spoilers for catching fire and none for mockingjay https://www.mtv.com/news/0xtyjr/hunger-games-catching-fire-subway-sandwiches

Zachary Coleman

And if that lady wants you all to be totally legit, this version looks OK: https://www.jwpepper.com/10319055.item

Re the strings music. Totally NTA. If your group performs the piece it would be technically correct and polite to go buy the score from the publisher, but it's very normal to share paper music, especially for practicing and learning together.

Sam Harrison

I found it funny how them installing a forcefield because of Katniss Attack really puts a light on them apparently not needing it for 65 years, while they oversaw their doomed victims with ranged weapons.

ZiggyWSB .

It was the day after my birthday when I got my wisdom teeth out, didnt even get a full day off school, I had to take a French midterm first, got the weekend, then had to go to school still on meds to take the rest of the midterms. I aced all the exams but didn't remember taking them lmao, apparently I'm really good at precalc on pain meds

Katie Knight

Oh my God... You all are partially responsible for me falling back into Neopets so I saw the title and gasped. Can't wait to relive the pea drama from your pov
