EARLY ACCESS: Charlie Kirk - A Dose of Buckley

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/rs-XDf1BYpk

Hey everyone, it's Early Access Day, and... no more explanation needed here today, is there? Enjoy.

In the wake of Charlie Kirk's assassination, Buckley looks at a number of topics: "Debate-me bros", people being fired or suspended from their jobs (including Jimmy Kimmel, who I don't think will be able to get a job at Office Depot or Starbucks after this!), people trying to make it about themselves, the grifters who've come out of the woodwork, and various stories about the shooter (including the released texts that neither side believe came from a 22 year old). And of course, the most important topic: How a somewhat popular podcaster who argued with teenagers at colleges became the ultimate martyr.

My intention wasn't so much to infantilize college students, but also... I went back to school at 26 with 18 year olds. They were DUMB. Like absolute MORONS. No life experience but an unearned confidence that they were right and they really already knew everything about the world, they were just there to get the piece of paper that the system says they need to move on. Now, that being said, my intent with that was to suggest that Charlie was a 31 year old man with a LOT more experience in debate, public speaking, and media. I said this to a YouTube commenter, but it's the equivalent to my argument about Jake Paul fighting old washed up MMA fighters, social media stars, or boxers who are 50lbs lighter than him. If he wants to be taken seriously, he should be fighting men his own age, weight, and experience, but he still refuses to do that, and the only time he DID do that, he lost. Charlie may have debated other people, I don't know, but his most public ones and the thing he seemed most proud of was going to colleges, or on shows like "Surrounded", to argue with younger people he KNEW he'd have one or more advantages over, which he could then post on his channel as "owning" them.

Not huge on the infantilization of college students to just kids, college is meant to be where some of our greatest minds are, but dear god we must change their diapers if any pesky new ideas emerge or someone challenges them, Charlie wasn’t debating kids, nor were college students the only people he debated just the most popular ones

Seems like a case of a politically motivated murder having the opposite effect. I had never heard of this guy before he died. He was trump’s unofficial ambassador to the youth. He had no official position, was not serving the United States, and made a lot of money off his Trumpism. It was kind of surreal seeing him being rendered honors that weren’t given to soldiers killed during the war on terror. I didn’t see the vice presidential plane going to Bagram to pick up KIAs.

This video made me think of a Tweet from an evangelical author (Dale Partridge) that said Charlie Kirk's death is "the most significant Christian event in our lifetime"....and it's like the Pope died a few months ago?! (I realize evangelicals don't recognize the authority of the Pope, but the Catholic Church is still the largest Christian group in the world.) Also interesting to see the international mourning/support after his death. I didn't realize his influence reached that far outside of North America....or maybe they're just grifting as you've alluded to.

Pretty scary how he died. He was not very intelligent though. I feel like he would have been that kid in English class where the teacher is like “The green light on the pier symbolizes Gatsby’s hope to be with Daisy,” and Chuck says “Well aaaaactually,” and then says something wrong but with enough confidence that it is kind of believable.
