It's a fantastic bit of effective world building, and Frank Herbert clearly thought it through well! Another example of that which comes to mind is C J Cherryh's novels in the alliance/union universe, where the culture and politicos are shaped by the FTL travel technology in really interesting ways - that also serve to give interstellar travel an eerie and dangerous feel, with ships occasionally getting lost...

Because everyone is used to fight with shields and their entire training and doctrine revolves around them, they are at a massive disadvantage when fighting Fremen who had to learn to fight without them.
