PARTY PEOPLE!
I really hope you like that 90s reference - it's really hard coming up with titles every month!
One of the questions in our office this week was wondering what 'It' is, in Whoomp There It Is by Tag Team.
Do you have an idea?
We settled on 'It' being the party vibe.
Here you go, a little insight on what happens in our NRB office.
Enjoy the episode!
Huge NRB clocktower fan, couldn't believe how short this game was but it was really interesting!! Although I am soooooo tired of Blair creating these horribly inaccurate worlds the last few games, she might as well be evil cause she's not helping the good team at all with all her paranoia!!

Some people do only pay for the BotC videos. And this video was 20+ mins shorter than their shorter BotC videos. It also just didn't feel up to par. This script is a very short script designed to end quick. They run this when they are on a time crunch on the stream and need a 30-40 min game to fill out the run time or between arranged games. That was the design of this script specifically. So why pick a short script? Nothing forced them too.

This was the best episode of Clocktower Iāve watched. It made my new playing feel more reasonable, was a great length, and was absolutely hysterical. Definitely the kind of content worth paying for.

I don't think the issue is with lack of content, it's just that this episode was below there standards, they have never done such a short episode and in the past on multiple occasions have run shorter games to make short episodes longer. They have also been on record saying there have been many times that episodes have had to be recorded because they ended early. Even if they couldn't have added another game here, they could have just showed a quick game from the past that never aired and people would be much happier. There are many people on Patreon just for the blood on the clocktower content and that is why so many are understandably upset and wanting more.

Not my favourite game of theirs. Length isn't an issue here, short games are fine, it's just that it felt really... rail-road-y, I guess? Felt like the evil team had a very narrow path to victory and were screwed otherwise. But the silliness made it fun, as always. So I'm happy. :-)

This was a fun one, reminds me of "Mistakes were made" (or whatever the one was called where Isaac and his team got shafted super early lol). Sometimes games are long, sometimes they're not. Nowhere in TOS does it state you guys will put up three hour epics every week, and if someone has misunderstood that, I feel that it may be good to revisit the tiers and their wording. With that said, I can tell you've all been busy prepping for the expo thing happening (soon?), and I'm excited for what comes next when you're back to your regular schedules :D
(And no, I'm not up for a debate so the two of you who have been commenting rigorously on everyone who disagrees with you, please leave me alone)

I think what isn't communicated to people is that this script isn't made to be this balanced thing. It was made to be silly and short. With lots of death. It's a silly script to play with any number of players while waiting for others. If it goes to day 3 or Day 4, something is going wrong.

Kaboom is noted for running quickly. Had I been producing this I would have either back pocketed Kaboom for a tag-on when a game ran short. I know it will run less than an hour and it could be perfect if I have an hour of extra time with the cast scheduled, or planned for a video which featured a Riot game and a Kaboom game. Maybe even Race to the Bottom if there were some folks who could stay for Teensey after.
Short games are fine, short videos that people pay for are not.

I can understand being disappointed that a short game was released as the monthly Patreon one but everyone complaining it's part of some kind of quality decline over time is massively overreacting. The Feb & March games were a standard 2-3 hours and it was only last month that ran shorter by nature of the ending.
Agree Doomsayer seems a poor choice in this script though.

Luke would have had to have claimed Storm Alchemist Boomdandy, hoped that the final 3 was Holly, Sullivan, Luke with them being treated as a sort of Evil Twin scenario but without the game loss condition and then in final 3 whacked himself with the axe.
I do not think that works because if you have them both claiming Alchemist you peer pressure them both into saying Doom.
Kyle Raymond
2024-06-03 10:14:59 +0000 UTC
I think this was really a hard one, it seemed like no chance for the Evil to really win this one. Holly as a demon is normally a very good chance of a long game, but they were crippled pretty early on, with no chance for balancing. If you can't balance a game on night 2, it's probably not going to result in a long game.

They have always filmed the monthly videos in advance. You can regularly tell this from what people are wearing. If this is the first time you've noticed that, cool, but that's not a new practice.

Idk I donāt see it that way. Youāre paying for uncut vids, BotC, exclusive bgc eps. In no way are you guaranteed a super long form episode of anything. Its still an ep of something you otherwise wouldnāt have seen. As I said in my comment if someone feels thats not worth it then only subscribe every 3 months or so and just watch whatever you have backlogged at that point if $120 a yr doesnāt seem worth it to you

2024-06-03 00:09:59 +0000 UTC
Not really. Kaboom is meant to be a short game script. This was only a 30-35 min game that got stretched to an hour with editing alone. Previously they would have used this as a bonus video or added it to a second short game video to make up for a quick game. So to pretend that they didn't have a SOP of what to do with short videos before is disingenuous. I like NRB but they are not your friends or mine, they are workers. People have every right to voice their displeasure when they pay for work. Some people only pay for BotC videos.
The fact is they didn't HAVE to make this their monthly video, they could have kept this short game for a bonus vid or as a filler for another short game. But this does mean they didn't film a video for this month at all. It sucks for people who like their longer content and expect more out of them.
Is it fair? No but it is the business model they have put out there for going on 3 years now.

2024-06-03 00:07:45 +0000 UTC
The issue is that this was clearly filmed a month ago with the last one. The script Kaboom is a short script its meant to be a fast game. So it means they didn't bother to film a new game and just went with the one they had in the can already. So the issue is that this was a quick game, meant to be a quick game. Which they have done in the past kept these as bonus content or if another game went short add them together. This just means something came up and they didn't film a episode for this current month. Which yeah fair if people are paying for new eps being tossed what would have before been a bonus video as the only video sucks.

Pretty sure Psychopath does not count as an execution (Virgin does). So what an attack on Sully would have exposed was that Sully was indeed the Stormcaught Alchemist and outed Luke as evil very very publicly.

I donāt want to pile on with negativity, but they set the standard themselves putting out 2+ hours of Clocktower content per month and people have subscribed/stayed subscribed based on that.
I donāt mind in the least that itās a sillier or shorter script, variety is good, but people are rightly pointing out that in the past if a game was short weād get a rerack, and this felt like the kind of game that veered off the rails early and called for one.
I love these guys and I donāt want to sound entitled but the relationship with the content creator is slightly different from when youāre consuming free YouTube content vs when youāre literally paying them.

The issue is that this is a tag on. This was recorded when the last month video was recorded. Kaboom (the script) is meant for a speed run game. So they knew this would be a short one. So it means they didn't actually film an episode this month they just used what was in the can (the speedrun game) instead. That isn't great and its not worth the month wait to see a game that was filmed now about 2 months ago.

He wasn't. Evil team lost from the offset. Set up fucked them hard. There were to many good team win conditions in play, to many ways for them to confirm good players. Sure Luke could have double bluffed the Alchemist but if you have to play a very specific way to even make the game playable, then the set up fucked you.

I think unfortunately this may be a mechanical requirement of the doomsayer. The psychopath rules state they don't have to use the ability if they don't want to, so if the storyteller detects a strong desire for the ability to not trigger, then they can choose not to trigger it. The doomsayer has no such rule, and also the doomsayer is not a minion ability, it's actually part of the point of a doomsayer that evil players won't want to doomsay, and if the storyteller chose to invalidate the doomsay it would be obvious they were evil anyway. Where a psychopath claim not activating is a normal thing that can happen, a doomsay not killing is mechanically impossible. For these reasons Ben didn't have a choice.

So if you pay for a 2 hour movie and the theater only shows 30 mins you would be happy right? Lets be clear, we are still very much paying customers. While the shorter episode is fine by me, its entirely valid for them to feel they didn't get their monies worth if BOTC is why they are paying for the sub.

Man ppl here are complaining way too much. Complaining about mistakes made by players is weird. Weāve had great games come from dumb mistakes like Sully claiming Clockmaker on day 1. Yes this is Patreon and youāre paying sure, but itās not super expensive and youāre still getting an hr episode and other content. Like just unsubscribe for a few months and come back and watch all the videos you missed if $5-10 doesnāt feel worth it based on your opinion of the quality of videos. The number of people complaining for what they think they should get is shocking. I got more than promised in terms of my monthly tier this month and the game was perfectly fine. Would you rather they drag out a game and repeat the same scripts over and over again so it was 2 hours long instead of having a fun Kaboom game?

2 short and very obviously filmed back to back episodes for paying patrons, Not going to lie, felt a little let down by this sadly. Last months game clearly ended sooner than was expected, so you run a second game, with a script designed to be quick, that's fine, but I think that should have been rolled into one months content. This game was rather uncomfortable to watch as well, with the whole "say Doom Holly!"... Sadly not the best video, hopefully next months will be back to the usual NRB quality. This one missed the mark.

I don't really agree with all the negative feedback on this one. IMO it's fine to occasionally have a more 'silly' script that's much more murdery fun than deduction. Yes mistakes were made by players but who cares, some times it's just as entertaining to watch them enjoying themselves rather than being master sleuths. I will say the run time is a bit disappointing, but honestly I miss the main channel running chonkier games as well. Some of my favorites were the Nemesis, Wonderland's War, The Thing videos that were a few hours. Not as much of a fan of the party games, but that's just down to my personal taste, not something that my Patreon membership is going to hinge on.

I suppose the fast-food joke was based on the script. It's "Kaboom", a script that's known to be funny and unpredictable and very, VERY fast. I think there are two or three possibilities for the game to end on the very first day!
Š”ŃŠ°Š½ŠøŃлав Доболев
2024-05-31 16:02:54 +0000 UTC
It's Kaboom. Kaboom is known to be volatile at best.
Ben recently has been going through the sort of 'classic' customs like Extension Cord (Viva La Sam), so Kaboom was probably on the list somewhere cause it's classic for just how silly it is. (For reference, there is a new script lurking made by Hungry at Grim Scenarios which is a tamed version of Kaboom meant to be speedran).
I agree the game wasn't ideal mostly due to the series of events and deductive reasoning, but that's something that happens in every game. It's just amplified here.

Despite having actually seen every NRB Clocktower episode, I haven't retained enough information about the game itself to know why the bad decisions made were bad decisions
However, the thing that I noticed is that they explicitly called it "fast" food in the intro, so at least what they did they did intentionally perhaps? I mean, maybe this was the end of a longer filming day and that's why they didn't give us an extra game like they normally would? And the fact that they normally do at the very least has earned them one time of not doing so for me

I posted pretty much the same thing on the YouTube and the discord. It felt very off, especially because of Ben defending that same point just a few weeks ago. The length of the video, the fact it was filmed on the same day as last month, the quality are all whatever. But that particular choice to let down pressure Holly into that situation was a really negative one that I donāt agree with because neither does Ben, yet he let it slide this time
Ollie Wells
2024-05-31 03:03:15 +0000 UTC
The episode being short is upsetting for sure, but what I'm more disappointed with is how Holly was pressured into saying Doom near the end.
No player should be pressured into doing anything. TPI's had a recent YouTube video where Ben was the psychopath, and was put into a similar situation where the players could confirm who was the bad player by having everyone claim psychopath and see who triggered the ability. He defended himself beautifully by saying that if a player is forced into doing something, then they did not make a choice, and their ability shouldn't trigger.
I wish there was a fabled character that has an ability along the lines of "If a player pressures another player to do something, something bad happen to them." Something similar to Hell's Librarian, that promotes positive gameplay.

Holly could have pressed the Tilly demon world where she knew Dom, who was MC picked, would die. She could have also ran that play herself. I think those were the only plays after day one.
The episode was okay. It was clear this was a short script ran after the last one (which was really good), it had a few routes to extend to at least three and maybe four days, and it was entertaining enough. Noble was not a great character to include though imo, would have preferred to see snake charmer in there.

I'm assuming that when they book people for this they schedule a 3 hour block in case the game takes a while. Since last month's game ran under two hours, I'm guessing they had extra time for a quick game, hence the Kaboom script... I think the Kaboom script easily could have provided a great episode, but I think it needed more thought and planning than this was given, but I can understand it in the moment. However I think in post-production, this should have been shelved as a potential bonus drop if another episode goes short.
EDIT: Actually, it looks like all three of the last BotC episodes were recorded on the same day, so the block must be more than 3 hours. I'm not sure why this one was rushed unless their block is 5 hours and they plan on two, but did three.
Brad
2024-05-31 01:19:21 +0000 UTC
It is, which is why I shouldn't have been run for the paid episode. We clearly like longer episodes with loads of deduction, and kaboom ensures so many people die in the night that it's obvious with only one information gathering role who the evil team are.
Joshua Wilding
2024-05-31 01:04:27 +0000 UTC
This script is almost impossible to play as a psychopath, because so many people can and might die in the night that it narrows down who the demon is really fast. Couple that with the doomsayer and you're completely screwed...
Joshua Wilding
2024-05-31 01:01:40 +0000 UTC
I see a lot of people disappointed with this episode, which I will say was fun for what it was... but I have to agree. Waiting a whole month for the next episode to release and it's under an hour, and features a wonky scrypt guaranteed to produce maximum chaos without much deduction, that's a damn shame.
Saying that, we don't know what the schedules were that day, and perhaps people had stuff to get ready for, and couldn't play a three hour bonanza. It's telling how the roles were given out without any thought that that might be the case, these are professional actors and youtubers active on more than one project at a time, and we should respect that. Instead of calling off this month's episode due to time constraints or schedules, they at least pulled through with something, and it was, at the very least, different.
Fabled characters suck though, I've yet to see them influence a game positively, and I would much rather see travellers instead, played by Laurie, who pop in for a night or two, throw everyone's information up in the air and leave again, that would be far more interesting!
Next time, and I'm sure they read all our comments, please ensure the script is hand-selected, roles given out with player confidence and ability in mind, with LOTS of deduction and puzzle solving, to create a feature-length worthy of the very best episodes on the channel!
Thanking you kindly!

Ben did Luke dirty here. Yes, Luke's action on day 2 was a terrible choice, but the whole game was set up very poorly and not balanced at all.
It was a quick game they added on after finishing early during last month's recording. It's a script for short games that got setup poorly and had ~35 minutes of actual gameplay stretched to a one hour edit.
This is not premium content, but that's not on Luke.

Nice to see I'm not the only person disappointed with this episode. In the past they add a bonus game onto short episodes yet here they are giving us the shortest episode yet as premium content.

Yeah, I did have that thought, that if Luke killed Dom early (or even nominated him first) then that could have saved things, but those are still really fine margins.

The game also could have worked if Luke had killed Dom on Day 1. Getting the Virgin out of the game before anyone can nom would have changed the entire landscape.

Yeah, evil had no chance if he didn't challenge Sully, and still only a very small chance if he did... And yet Ben acted as though It was the obvious decision for Luke to make, despite it working completely against his token, and therefore being unintuitive.
It seemed really poorly thought through, and they must have been in a rush not to just chalk that one up as a loss and re-rack.

Ben literally told him "This means you could also bluff as the storm caught Alchemist, just FYI" during the setup, so Luke had already been tipped off that he could have bluffed Alchemist Boomdandy and created a kind of evil twin situation, saving his actual ability until a more crucial point later. He could have also kept hidden for a day or 2 (or the whole game) to make people question if Sully was actually a minion that knew the Alchemist wasn't really in play. I think Luke just missed the chance to double claim, then went openly evil which unfortunately confirmed a lot of information. I don't think it's fair to blaim Ben for the short game, or calling it poorly balanced. It's all down to blind decisions, if Tilly chose to die and not confirm the Noble info for example, who knows where it may have gone...

I don't think bluffing as the alchemist would have worked at all really... If he bluffed at alchemist in this script, he didn't have many options for minion...
If he bluffs as Assassin or (his actual role) Psychopath, then he's outed immediately because if he actually was one of those powers, he could just kill Sullivan who wouldn't have had the Stormcatcher's protection...
If he bluffs as Boomdandy or Fearmonger, then he'll never get to use his actual ability until maybe it's near the end of the game, but then he just makes the game go from the demon being one of 4 or 5 people to one of 2 or 3, since both the person he killed and himself would no longer be under demon suspicion...
As masterful as Daddy Ben usually is, this set up gave the evil team nowhere to hide.

Not fully through the game, but it sounds like the idea was to give Luke the ability to claim alchemist who got the psychopath's ability.

The evil player amongst the noble pings being someone very likely to come out as evil was always going to be way too powerful.
They hinged this being a workable game on the hope of Luke immediately challenging Sullivan's alchemist claim, despite him never having played with the Stormcatcher before... That's kinda way too much to hinge the whole game on.

Spoilers
way to throw Luke under the bus Ben. If the whole balance of the game was based on him bluffing a specific role, then why was he given a role that he had to announce publicly? Poorly selected script imho.

Completely agree. If the next few months of patreon feature pointless posts of best pub games etc, and exclusive content like this means the most exciting thing to look forward to is a cruise from Miami rather than quality content, I'm cancelling and I'll come back in 6 months time to see if it has gotten any better.

I am a bit, yes. Given the excellent games we've had on Patreon, an hour runtime somehow feels... underwhelming? Well, rough games happen from time to time. Next month is going to be better. Probably.

Rough game. Mild spoilers: When I saw the playtime, I expected something had gone wrong. But this was super one-sided. This is a quickly added Kaboom game after they had finished early, dressed as a Patreon exclusive.

I'm sure it's a great episode and I'll watch it but this is the same cast, wearing the same clothes as last month's patreon exclusive game so they clearly finished last month's game early, tagged on a quick game of Kaboom and split the videos out over 2 months. So personally I would call that lazy. Before they would have put both video's together in one instalment. Now you get the bare minimum.

It's not lazy just because the game ended earlier than you'd have liked it to. Part of what I love about BOTC is that it's often unpredictable!
