Forest Illustration Process

This is definitely one of my favorite illustrations I've ever made, it really helped me understand color stuff more and how to play with it in a piece. I held myself back for a while by feeling like everything had to have precise lines, this was one of those where I just realized "actually, I can just make it sketchy it's okay" and it turned out for the better. When I made this I was also really insecure about my backgrounds, and used this as an opportunity to better understand them. The comic purposefully simplifies the heck out of the backgrounds but I definitely had to learn some more complex stuff like this before being able to do that, what really helped here was being delicate and loose with the lines and then letting the colors do most of the heavy lifting. You can see in the first WH episode that I was kinda initially drawing the trees similar to how they're portrayed here, but then I realized that incorporating black shading made a lot more sense for the Webtoon scroll format.

Also, luminosity layers!!! Done in moderation they can really bring a piece together, especially when you're trying to make the colors all aesthetically pleasing. In the Ramen Waitress illustration I used luminosity and then went over the lineart again with its base color, and I learned that technique initially from this drawing! I also used it in my pfp and overall its become pretty common in my illustrative work. This piece got me a lot more confident drawing backgrounds, and nowadays they're fairly easy! AND UM LMAO going through the file I found this stupid extra sketch i did 😭😭 I have no memory of drawing this.
