WHYD Illustration Process

I really tried to get out of my comfort zone with this one!! I was going for a more delicate painterly look, with some of my previous illustrations I still felt like something was missing from them. I guess here I was trying to get the brushstrokes to look more careful? I really admire that kind of style in digital illustrations and I plan to play around with it more! I'm especially happy with the colors though, yet again I'm guilty of screwing around with blend modes until it yields a nice result. I also really like these stylized eyelashes I've seen around in others' artwork so I thought I'd implement them. Though this actually started with the drawing on the last slide, kind of just a doodle that I was trying to turn into a illustration of its own but it ended up being too plain. Pretty much just stole the colors from that drawing and repurposed them for the final piece lol, but the difference blend mode really solved this one for me! I think with every piece I make I'm especially trying to find new ways to play with color, I really like how this one is simultaneously dark yet vibrant. I do wish I had the time and energy for more complex pieces though, like fullbodies and backgrounds and stuff. Inspiration tends to not strike as easy for that kind of art unfortunately, and if I don't have that kind of innate motivation I genuinely can't get the illustration done. Kinda wanna keep the inspo behind this one vague though! 🤫

I also wanted to mention how the lighting reminds me of some painted plastic miniatures ive seen from painting competitions. Little thoughts like this inspire me, so thanks for making these sorts of posts.

Thats hella cool. The texture of the paint strokes combined with the sketchy lines really helps give The Wolf some "life" and depth.
