I actually think ”TO the Morning After” is probably the best episode of the show (not my favourite, but probably the best). They manage to create a good balance between comedy and drama, taking the subject matter very seriously but not forgetting it’s a sit-com. Having the other four stuck in Monica’s room keeps the cast together without interfering (could you imagine if they kept cutting from R&R to the other four at the coffee shop?). The cast are also perfect in this episode. Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc and Perry land every joke and deliver in the emotional scenes, and Aniston and Schwimmer do the same times ten. IIRC, the end of this ep is one of two scenes on the entire show where the actors broke down crying for real. As for the storyline itself, I’m not entirely sure, I don’t side 100 % with either of them. Rachel repeatedly says that she considered them broken up so it wasn’t technically infidelity, but sleeping with someone else the same night you break up is just scummy. Something interesting though that ties into other episodes (like the football one), Ross is consistently terrible at owning his mistakes and losses, and taking accountability. I hadn’t thought of it before, but Oscar from the Cocoa Couch on yt pointed it out, and it’s so true. Ross probably would have done better in the aftermath if he didn’t keep trying to blame Mark, and Chandler and Joey, and things Rachel might have said and done. I don't care if you break up with someone, you don't immediately sleep with someone else. One argument that ends with "maybe we should take a break!" shouldn't mean you immediately have sex with someone else. That's just gross. And when we look at how the characters have discussed and handled cheating in their circle. Paolo, they all immediately tossed him out as a scumbag and encouraged Phoebe to tell Rachel the truth. Janice cheats on Chandler and they immediately encourage Joey to tell him.

2024-08-20 21:47:03 +0000 UTCWhile I 100% think Ross was scummy for hooking up with someone an hour after they took a break/broke up, I also think Gunther was really shitty here. He was basically beaming ear to ear over Rachel being heartbroken. By all means tell her, she deserved to know, but being so gleeful and smug over it is gross as hell.
