(Yes they look like Akio and Shurui, Yes i did it on purspose <3) In ancient Greece some types of beard could tell to which particular philosophical school or political ideology a man could belong to, and by shaving Epaminondas simply wanted to imply he didn't want to take part in any of it (even if being an adult without a beard was considered kinda immature or even effeminate)
