Light Study

Really cool lighting in this shot, for those of you who have watched our skin tutorial this month, you can see all the themes we talked about in that video being put to work here.

There's a pretty heavy emphasis here on the form of the skin. Depending on the subject you're drawing, if you can nail the wrinkles and folds in their skin in all the correct places, you can easily capture their overall likeness.

The higher level of luster on the skin is important to pay attention to as well. Luster indicates presence of oils or moisture. In this scenario it can appear like a combo of oil and sweat, which adds to the grittiness of a scene, interesting to consider.

Lastly the overpowering red/magenta light on the left side of the portrait is a great case of lighting colour overwhelming local colour on a subject. This can be challenging as we traditionally understand skin to be off-white/beige/brown. But when you encounter a lighting scenario like this, simply begin with a base colour representing the colour of that light and add layers of darker/lighter elements from there.

I also exported this to procreate to add in some final touches with the noise effect and chromatic aberration! :)
