Might be one of my new favourite pieces. The very first part of this whole process is starting with an idea, which initially came from a pose reference I saw. After having a rough idea of what kind of scene I want to paint, I look for other references to support the visual elements I need to paint. Things such as lighting, textures (armour, clothing etc.) and design elements. I'll attach a screenshot of my reference board below for you guys to check out.
Then with a solid sketch, I move on to greyscale, which helps me figure out the lighting scenario and focal points in the composition. To colour the greyscale painting, I use an overlay layer and just play around with colours until I land on something I like. After that, it becomes pretty much a regular painting process, but this is definitely much more time consuming. For this piece though I also allowed myself to slow down a bit and be more patient with my brush strokes. I think with this being an idea I really enjoyed, it made it much easier for me to trust my own process :)
