Did Warren Harding Invent the Word "Normalcy?"

Spoiler alert: he did not.

Still, it's a fascinating story about a word that probably fascinates me too much.

My brother makes an appearance, and I felt obliged to finally give his business a shout out. He has helped out my channel so much over the years, I feel it was the least I could do.

I hope we return to normalcy soon. Thanks for your continued support!

Totalus Rankium should definitely watch this video. They’re at Theodore Roosevelt in their podcast on the Presidents. Any week now...

I was surprised at how much I got into the story when researching! Glad you liked it. :)

I do vaguely recall Quayle and the potato controversy. It seems so silly now in retrospect, especially since now we are in the Age of Trump, but words matter, and apparently how you spell them matters, to. :)

As a linguist by hobby, I do love etymology stories like this!

Andrew Schneider

That was interesting. Etymology doesn't get enough play these days. The last time I really saw a popular issue that related to etymology, was the Vice President Dan Quayle spelling bee (those Bush's know how to pick 'em). Prior to that, most people thought the word "potato", was spelled without an "e" at the end. But when a student spelled it that way during a spelling bee, that Quayle was judging, he called the student out as an incorrect for spelling it without the "e". For several weeks after that, a maelstrom (or is that malstrom), of controversy broke out concerning whether or not the word was spelled with an "e". Strangely, the "e" on the end debate seemed to go along party lines. In the end, it was decided that either spelling is acceptable. In fact, Google will now add the "e" on Android, and so does Microsoft Word if you try to spell the word without it. To me, this will always be a Republican "e". I am a meat and potatos Democrat.
