Why we no longer have anything in common

Have you ever wondered why everybody seems to hate each other these days? Well, at least online they seem to. In this video, I attempt to break down exactly why that is.

Thanks to Dr. Sam Richards for providing his wisdom. And check out his channel SOC 119!

Thank you all for your continued support.

Why we no longer have anything in common

Deep Thoughts by Daniel Kolbin

Mr. Beat

Humans are so interesting, unique, and weird. I wonder what it takes for any person to change their mind. And I wonder if it was really my choice to change my mind on quite a number of things in politics growing up, or why I keep some certain other ideas.

Daniel Kolbin

Haha

Mr. Beat

He's an awesome dude!

Mr. Beat

Its cool you brought in Sam Richards. I see a lot of right leaning react videos react positively to his lectures but read that at one time conservatives hated him.

Devin Canada

Because of that thumbnail (nah jk)

Daniel Kolbin

I mean we think people "actively align" when often they just fall in line.

Mr. Beat

Not sure if I follow your reasoning here but that's OK. I don't want to take up your time.... You've got other projects to work on to educate the masses. Haha.

DANTE VERONA

I just wonder if we give humans too much credit. What I mean by that is....how much are we truly agents or just cogs in the machine.

Mr. Beat

While I recognize the social divide is demonstrably real and an adverse characteristic, I would argue it's not without sufficient justification. I cannot pretend to look the other way when I encounter others who align themselves with a political party full of lies, hatred and conspiracy theories; take rights away from women including 12 year old little girls who are let's just say, violently assaulted... It's anyone's prerogative the company they want to keep. I want nothing to do with them... Good work Mr. Beat. This one will get the attention it rightly deserves.

DANTE VERONA

Ohhhhhh! I agree with you. I was just trying to get people's attention. Perhaps it's too clickbaity?

Mr. Beat

I think of "everybody" and "hate" as too broad, though I agree you roll it back some in the discussion.

Edward Goldstick

Thanks. How is it "harsh," though? That adjective caught me off guard.

Mr. Beat

Well done, Matt, though a bit harsh in my opinion. That said, the hard question is differentiating between structural and systemic factors that have weakened societal integrity (think of Tom Friedman's 2 dimensional, highly-interconnected "flat world" as an increasingly thin piece of paper) versus a few nefarious powerful self-serving individuals in various realms (esp. the media) exploiting those weaknesses to divide-and-dogmatize.

Edward Goldstick

Good observations there Nate...I will say that generational divides also seem oversensationalized.

Mr. Beat

Interesting topic and your reasons for the divide are spot on! The divide between the younger and older generation I feel like is especially big these days. In the last 10 years, cultural issues like gay marriage becoming legal, trans issues and social justice issues have been embraced more by the younger generation than the older generation. Plus, the country is becoming more racially diverse. While I believe some people struggle to accept these cultural changes , I think the shitty economic situation for a lot of people makes it easier for them to channel their anger towards scape goating groups they don’t understand as opposed to channeling their anger into fixing our broken economic system.
