52 - The Octopus 6: The Death of Danny Casolaro

Danny Casolaro's investigation into The Octopus ends in a West Virginia motel in brutal fashion. We try to piece together his final days and discuss what his death means to skeptics and believers alike. This is the hinge point of our entire miniseries; although Danny's role in the story ends here, we'll be following up on his leads and chasing PROMIS around the world for the remainder of the series. From here on, things only get darker.

idk what the answer is, but this guy didn't kill himself. This is the only point in the story so far where I feel the documentary provides real added value because they talk to one of the paramedics who was at the scene. He said the tendons were severed noting that the wrists "just flopped" when you picked up his arms. It also shows you the photos of these cuts which lend credence to his account and put the question in my mind as to how someone could self-inflict like that. Y'all have done a great job with this story btw. The documentary was less focused and wasted a lot of time chasing Danger Man. I joined to hear more about the Octopus, but I'm definitely sticking around to listen to the other store's y'all have done.

And another thing: please spare us the mindreading and stereotyping. No, we don't necessarily converge on the outer edge of some horseshoe if we think the circumstances of Danny's death are important beyond mere matters of justice in a cold case. However tragic any death, suicide, or murder is on a personal level, the personal level is not why we tuned into this podcast. People die, commit suicide, and are murdered every day, sadly. Sometimes justice is delayed or denied and that's also sad, but we don't do long form podcasts for them if they're only important on a personal level.

Couldn't disagree more with the framing established at the beginning of this episode. Either Danny committed suicide or he was killed. That's a matter of fact. Either PROMIS was bugged or it was not. That's also a matter of fact, not of judgement. However, essentially none of us knows with certainty these facts. Consequently, we have to settle for likelihoods. "What is more likely in our estimation, given our prior beliefs combined with new observations?" If we decide it's likely Danny was murdered, this updates our prior beliefs when we consider the other elements of this ostensible conspiracy. Put another way, please don't tell me it doesn't matter whether or not Danny was murdered. I'll be the judge of what matters to me, thank you very much. Just stick to the facts, or at least matters of fact. Present the evidence, make the arguments, and I'll either be persuaded that Danny was murdered, or I won't be. Either way, whatever the outcome, THEN we can move on to subsequent matters of fact.

I really want to hear ghost and bengazi break down the show. I really enjoyed the netflix doc fwiw. Especially since i’m relistening to ghost series and now i can put names to faces.

Thats exactly my pet theory of conservative politics. Or neoconservative or whatever label u want to put on the politics of invading and looting foreign countries. The same ideology that will destabilise a region will then profit politically when the outcome of their actions comes back via mass migration from said war torn areas. Then it’ll be all about demonising asylum seekers. Fucking disgusting circle if u ask me.

John

Last question on this thread - does anyone think that the US involvement in funding drug cartels in latin and south America (i.e. Iran Contra et al.) helped to destabilize those locations causing our own problem with over mass migration into the U.S.? These are the questions that pop into my head after reading about parts of the Octopus.

Why do I keep reading that Joe Cuellar is still alive? I could have sworn you folks reported he was dead. Can you reconfirm?

Winstie

I was on tenterhooks this entire episode. I'd love to know what you think about the Netflix program in 2024 having access to the sketch of the guy who was with Danny before he died - looked like Joe Cueller. They were able to gain access to the case files at last down in West VA.

The idea that Casolaro faked his own murder is the theory that this show ultimately landed upon: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0SGrl1HSnNGv8w5G8sGLB6?si=Xz2gT2NpRtCqCCSCB0Lezw

Reminds me a bit of the debate about Salvador Allende’s death. Very different circumstances, but the arguments about the cause of death bear similarities.

Thanks man, can't wait!

That's another one of mine called This Utopia but it's on my laptop (the music one, which is in the shop until Weds). What I'll be doing now I'm back home is compiling these tracks into a freebie Bandcamp/Spotify release so something should be ready in the next fortnight.

Agreed. Disgraceful shit.

Some of the counter accusations of theories against Danny I'd have never heard of are shocking and appalling.
