I was quite young at the time, but I have vivid memories of the whole Patty Hearst kidnapping drama, which was given wall-to-wall news coverage. Nebbishy loser Steven Weed was interviewed regularly. And I remember the gun battle/arson footage particularly acutely. (Coverage of the Waco seige/inferno brought it straight back.) The entire thing was utterly bizarre and seemed altogether 'off' even to my 10-year-old mind. It definitely cemented the idea, seeded by Altamont and the Manson killings, that everything about the 60s - cultural, political, and pharmacological - had descended into horrific putrescence. Which may well have been the point of the whole exercise.
