Interesting. Have you looked at Defiance? It sounds similar on some levels a MMOFPS where the best equipment can drop randomly but generally comes from grinding reputation(daily/weekly quests again). It's a bit more mature and has a fair amount of content now(I have a PC so can't compare directly with Destiny). It might give you some insight as to how Destiny may evolve or could have been different.
