Dark Souls 2 Reviews: Worth Worrying About?

This ended up being slightly more of a ramble than I initially planned it to be, but hopefully you'll find it interesting! It's a lengthy chat about the realities of the review process, and how valuable most early reviews of Dark Souls 2 are likely to be.

Dark Souls 2 Reviews: Worth Worrying About?

Yes that is sort of the issue with Cult Classic games. They're certainly not for everybody, but when you're into them, you are REALLY into them. I love Harvest Moon games for example, and I know on a purely intellectual level and to most people I am sure, they suck. But I love them. I don't know if it's the relaxing atmosphere or the juvenile approach to romance, but I love it and spend an embarrassing chunk of my life on it lol. So when I do go to look up a review (so as to see how this one stacks up to others I love) I don't go to a newcomer to the series, but a veteran like me who will know specifically how it stacks up to the others. That and it has the bonus benefit of being out of the public eye, so no pressure from that end either, since I think you hit the nail on the head with that one as well.

WHO REVIEWS THE REVIEWER REVIEWERS?

Maybe you should do a weekly video about reviewing reviewers? Give them ratings /10 and point out their pro's and con's ;) I totally agree that it is useful if a review points out flaws in a game, if I feel I can say "that game sounds like fun" despite the bad points the the review has done it's job. I also find it can help me go into a game with the right expectations and appreciate the game for what it is not what i hope it to be. Take Thief for example, I haven't played it yet, but when I do I wont go into it expecting it to be like the original Thief and I am sure i will get more enjoyment out of it due to that fact. Admittedly if it's a game or series I am really into, it does sting a bit to see negative comments about it, or that it doesn't live up to the expectations I have in my head. And on some level it does make me feel like I want to defend/deny it, mostly to avoid the disappointment that it might be true. I guess I realized a while ago that most of my disappointment with games comes from selfishly high expectations and ignorance.
