Lifting the curtain on brand deals that fail

Here's my next video. Although... this is not actually what it will look like because the sponsor pulled out at the last minute. Their branding strategy will focus on people with sensitive skin, and I think you can see why they thought this video didn't quite have the right feel to it... It's about getting cut! So how did this happen and what are the repercussions?

I guess this just happens in the heat of things every now and then. We started working on this video in November and I sent them the idea and a first sketch of the script. We workshopped the integration a bit and I got the green light to make the video. Late Dec I finished it and sent it to them. By then they had some plans for their new marketing strategy, but nothing final yet I expect. They asked to lift it over the holidays. But in the new year, the new marketing strategy was in full swing and this video does not fit. It's possible that I should've sent them some earlier versions so that we could've caught the incompatibility earlier, but that's always a hard balance to strike. Not only do I want to prevent brands from having too much say in the content itself, but many marketing people also have a hard time seeing the potential in a sketch and shut it down, even if it would've been a great video. So I always try to send something that's almost finished.

So what are the repercussions?
Luckily we had an agreement on paper. This is suuuuper important for these kinda cases. In theory I could force them to let me upload it. But I wouldn't make any friends. Instead they pay the fixed portion of the deal, but the sales % that we agreed to will be forgotten. The video is under my copyright, so as long as I remove all their branding and design elements I should be good to go. So this weekend I modelled a razor of my own to use in the video. (see attached picture)

I hope you enjoyed this look behind the curtains!

Greetings,

Aldo
