Q&A for Livestream

I was thinking it would be nice to do a little Q&A for you guys, so I can answer some questions when I do the Patreon livestream. Feel free to comment with any question about production, life or whatever!

I will probably do the stream when I'm back from my 4 shows in a row Triple Threat tour trip, and I will post it up on here for those of you who can't watch it live.

Much love!
Christian

Appreciate your knowledge man! First things first, on my next mix I'll make sure I keep tighter control on volume levels and experiment with the things you mentioned, volume automation - using a limiter. don't think anything is wrong with the mixer or my soundcard as they are brand new and diff don't sound wrong - I just think some artists EQ their mixes and up bass frequencies etc to give their mix a different sound signature - I guess, I will experiment with ozone dynamic eq on the mix and see if that gets it where I want. Mixes from excision and well his friend downlink - there's just so much bass in those mixes, if I took the same song and just made it louder - to me, it still sounds different, not as "good" - so I guess what I am asking is if straight EQing is the way to go to achieve that or if there are other/more tricks to the trade that you know of - I hope I kind of made that clear - I'm a noob so I mean these mixes I listen too might not even have a lot of post processing done to them - I could just be making this all up but it never hurts to ask questions! Thanks!! Look forward to the main QA.

Hey Christian, I just joined on here and i tried to private message you about something before but it wouldn't seem to work for whatever reason. If you could get back to me when you can that'd be sick, cheers bro!

I'll keep the question about dubplate culture for the livestream and try to answer your other question here. I think people like Excision do Studio / DAW mixes rather than actually recording a live mix on decks, so it's kind of hard to compare. I usually do as Fabien said too, record on quiet levels and then put a simple limiter on the mix, to try to push the levels as far as I can without losing too much in terms of quality. I think a lot of it has to do with keeping consistent levels while you mix, so trying to keep all the drops at around the same volume rather than starting out quietly and then getting louder later in the mix, which is actually pretty hard to do. What I have done before is to automate the volume of the mix so that all the drops are at around the same level before I put a limiter on it. About the frequencies, I'm not sure why your tracks sound different when you record the mix from your DJM into Ableton. The CDJS and DJM really just play the track as it is and shouldn't change the frequencies if you don't change the EQ controls. Maybe there is an issue with the sound card in your mixer or the connection to your computer?

Appreciate your feedback Fabien, thing is I do record at those levels - I still find my mixes to be dry, I can compress and boost my volume all day. If you listen to mixes from other artists in random, carbin, downlink, badphaze etc etc, - their mixes for lack of better terms sound fat. Mids and highs are good - standout and the bass hits all the right frequency's. Making a mix with the same songs just doesn't even sound the same so I'm sure I infekt might beable to give us some tips on what we can do to make it sound better.

ofc id def take any other advice than christian has for us haha

about the making your mixes sound better part, a good technique i tried would be to record it like real quiet (between -6 and less), and then maximizing it ! for me it made the doubles stand out quite good and the other parts sounded less boring than the doubles in the mix, like when u go from double to a single track, u can often hear a drop in volume, that fixes it a little bit

And your thoughts on dubplate culture. It'd also be cool to learn how you started producing/djing - your first gig etc. I'll let others ask those questions. Any plans for merch?

Hey Christian! If you could give us some pointers/tips on making our mixes sound better - post production. Recording from say a djm900nxs2 into ableton & uploading them straight just doesn't sound good, the sublevels arent jthere - the mix sounds dry. I have a feeling you might be able to help us get a better, bassier sound to our mixes post production for promotional and leisurely use - what kinda of eqing/compression etc we should be doing and what plugins should we use. Thanks!
