First Wallpaper WIP

Here's your sneak peek for your first wallpaper. I took the most popular idea that y'all voted on in the announcement post for these guys and tweaked it a bit - I didn't realize how freaking ambitious I was being with this stupid thing. I'm such a fool! Detailed backgrounds?! What was I thinking?!

Google tells me that the most popular screen size is 1024x768, so that's the current working size of this bad boy. Does that sound right? Do you have a screen size that's different?

Nah dude, it's all in Photoshop! I found this WICKED tutorial about how to make super easy perspective lines and it's been amazing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9PIUG2fjcQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CSnRRO8wRk

As usual, you are the fountain of useful information, Creighton. Imma steal all this, thanks. (seriously. thanks)

Meg, this looks awesome! Are you using Manga Studio?

Orrig doesn't seem likely to have properties like this, he is like a nomad, imho.

When making desktop computer wallpapers, there are three (primary) aspect ratios to consider. 4:3 is the "old square" monitor style, with 1600x1200 being a common "large" size used. This aspect ratio is less common. 16:9 is the most popular widescreen with a resolution of 1920x1080 as a standard. This is also known as 1080p. 16:10 is the less common widescreen ratio where you would see 1920x1200 as a good example. What I would recommend for wallpapers is making the image at 2560x1600 -- one size above "normal," and at 16:10. Throw in some guidelines on the image to mark out where 2560x1440 (16:9) and 2048x1536 (4:3) are. Here's a template for you, so you don't have to do the work: http://pointystick.org/temp/WallpaperTemplate(MegIsAwesome).psd With those "borders" set, you can then plan-sketch the best of the image information inside there. You'll also be able to "scale down" to smaller desktop resolutions while still having good detail at higher resolutions. Since you're scaling across clean multiples of eight (2560 = 320 * 8, 1920 = 240 * 8) the image shouldn't suffer badly from resize jaggies. Technical term. And as an artist, I hope it goes without saying that drawing larger and then scaling down is a valid and very useful tactic. You'll want to be careful you properly "skimp" on detail, expecting to scale down for the final. Things always look better when you step further back from the image. Also, the Steam Hardware Survey is a great place to steal information about people's computers. http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey They've got a section with info about resolutions. You'll see 1920x1080 is used by a good third of all their users, and 1366 x 768 (still 16:9) is at a quarter.

wow looks good so far! yep, that screensize should be alright for me

on side note, 1024x768 was popular on old CRT monitors. Since the plague of FHD came, you can't get good old 4:3 monitors anymore as anything but CRT.

Haha! I love it! Is this Orrig's house?! Because I'm not sure if it's a house or a tavern. I initially assumed Tavern, but taking a look at it it could be somebody's house, a big house, but a house. Hence my assuming that if it were a house it would be Orrig's.

This!^ My screen is 1920x1080. Always better to start big and scale/frame/crop down as needed.

Its awesome! I suggest you to make it in 1920x1080p for FullHD displays, then the smaller resolutoins will havê no problems to fit. Tnx for the work!
