2018-07-15 18:13:34 +0000 UTCAll great options, but had to go Gargoyle because they have a special place in my heart <3
2018-07-15 10:21:16 +0000 UTCI want to see whatever a Glow Troll is.

2018-07-14 21:49:03 +0000 UTCIf they're not the ones in the banner... I vote for lantern men. Will o wisp ghosts. Or the ancestral spirits said to descend with the northern light and kill careless people to bring them back home. Visual effect get.

2018-07-14 21:44:00 +0000 UTCGlow trolls are the one in that banner right? Gargoyles are cool as heck, but I've waited a long time for that scene lol

2018-07-14 21:41:26 +0000 UTCI love Manticores though if you are also looking for ideas to look at - The Groot Slang could be interesting. Groot Slang: A huge elephant-like creature with the tail of a serpent found in the legends and folklore of west Africa.
Black Ice Gryphon
2018-07-14 20:45:04 +0000 UTCA chimera wouldbe cool^-^

2018-07-14 08:58:39 +0000 UTCI don't know what a "Glow Troll" is but I'm curious.

2018-07-14 02:08:10 +0000 UTCI'm with Robert on this. Jackelope. a gaint killer Jackelope.
2018-07-14 01:44:57 +0000 UTCI'm awfully fond of rusalka! Slavic mermaid-like ladies who either drown or tickle people to death
Genevieve Hammang
2018-07-14 01:33:07 +0000 UTCLots of goblins.
Golnor
2018-07-14 01:25:01 +0000 UTCOwlbear. That is all.

2018-07-14 00:57:52 +0000 UTCI wouldn't mind seeing a Bunyip

2018-07-14 00:52:02 +0000 UTC*cracks knuckles* OK SO (a lot of cool options have been brought up already so i'm just gonna throw in some maybe lesser-known ones) Rakshasa/Rakshasi: Beings from Hindu or Buddhist mythology that typically look like humans with fangs and claws (and often red hair?) who do things like eat people. Shapechangers and/or illusionists. Cons: look pretty human, unless you take some fun artistic license to 'em. Gandaberunda: Also from Hindu mythology, a giant bird with two heads (and sometimes a peacock tail!) big enough to carry away elephants Hellhounds: ok these are pretty well known Geryon and/or Gegenees: Two Greek mythology instances of giants with too many extra body parts. Six arms, three heads, extra torsos and legs. Gashadokuro: Japanese yokai. Giant skeletons! I just realised I'm throwing in a lot of giant creatures here for some reason.
2018-07-14 00:47:27 +0000 UTCAnd I know it's not likely, but I'd love to see your interpretation of a kludde. Maybe for the beastiary?
Renee
2018-07-14 00:31:15 +0000 UTCI *really* like the idea of a glow troll.
Renee
2018-07-14 00:17:43 +0000 UTCWhat about Grendel, like in Beowulf. Just as another option to consider :)

2018-07-14 00:09:53 +0000 UTCCircumstances provide a lot of hooks.. where was the critter the moment before it became relevant in the story? What makes today different from last week? What is it fighting for? What will it absolutely *not* do? What main character do you want to spotlight, what trait do you want to show, and how can the monster be the polar opposite of that?

2018-07-13 23:53:11 +0000 UTCI like all your suggestions and I'm looking forward to seeing what you choose!

2018-07-13 23:49:12 +0000 UTCI'm feeling something swampy and Slavic at the moment. Perhaps something like the Bukavac!
2018-07-13 23:42:00 +0000 UTCIf it something down with the cave elves: bio-luminescent serpent, frog, jellyfish, regularfish, or something. If it is something that poses riddles: manticore, gargoyle, dragon, or sphynx are all classics. If it's a familiar: definitely cat-like or dragon-like (I'm not prejudiced, really.). If it's a door guardian: gargoyles or chinese lions. If it's a random critter they fight, anything on the list but make it beastly by crossing it with a non-animal (crystals, minerals, fungus, etc.). The interesting thing I find about your list is that they ALL fit into both the "knowledgeably ally" or "dark, monster nemesis to defeat" subtypes, so it's difficult to answer without knowing what you need them for. (Edited to rephrase my tired brain.)

2018-07-13 23:41:12 +0000 UTCCockatrice!! Or Sphinx?
Katie
2018-07-13 23:20:11 +0000 UTCHydra or something else that could live in an ancient sewer.
Moe Lane
2018-07-13 23:09:13 +0000 UTCDepending on the circumstances in the story, you could go with an Amarok, That's a giant wolf in Inuit mythology. Unlike most wolves, the Amarok hunts alone. They stalk and devour those who hunt alone at night. Having the crew stalked by a giant wolf would lend really nice tension to the narrative.
Chris Edwards
2018-07-13 23:03:29 +0000 UTCJackelope! Seriously, a giant monster jackelope.
Robert
2018-07-13 22:58:58 +0000 UTCGiant Evil Wazagan? (hopeful look) Barring that a Gargoyle.
