The sequel can be hard to watch because Carpenter never had the budget, it feels very cheap, even at the time. It's kind of sad. The film is still fun to watch if you love Carpenter & Snake character.

If I remember correctly, this film was fairly popular as a late summer movie in the theaters, and then gained cult status in the following couple of years because of two reasons. One, it was shown repeatedly on HBO (I think), so it was one of those movies that was always on whenever you turned on your tv. Two, this is right when video stores and video rentals became huge, so it gained more viewership through that. As I've been watching your reactions to films from the 80s and 90s, I'm realizing that people may have fondness for these movies because of how many times they saw them on the pay movie channels. Not that they're bad movies, but just as you said, the nostalgic feelings we get turn them into "classics." But as you also said, some movies are good for their time, and others transcend their time and are still impressive and entertaining regardless of when they were made.
