July Update

Hello you exceptionally exceptional Patreon people!

I hope all of you are doing wonderful, that the weather is exactly as you like it and that all loot boxes you open all week only contain items of legendary rarity!

The Twilight Princess video is online and I’m quite happy with how it turned out!

The thing is the following: I think my newer videos are all perfectly fine videos and I really like them - however my older stuff had this certain silly lightheartedness, that I feel the newer videos somewhere lost along the way.

So when writing the Twilight Princess script I focused a bit on rediscovering this fast paced weird silliness and I think it ended up working!

At least in my humble onion the script ended up being really well paced!

The Twilight Princess video was in general one that had me a bit worried - I always knew what I wanted to waffle about when discussing Wind Waker and Majora, and I already have the core points of the Breath of the Wild and Skyward Sword video mapped out - but for Twilight Princess I only knew a couple of things I wanted to bring up before getting to work - so I’m doubly happy that the video turned out fine!

So that was the good news.

The bad news: Well, my beloved PC sadly left the world of the living while working on the video.

He entered the very not liminal realm of electronic scrap halfway through the cutting process.

Poor PC - but almost a decade of hard unpaid labor kind of does that to one I guess.

So my PC literally exploding (metaphorically) isn’t that big of a deal on its own.

At this point the PC had been causing problems for years and it was inevitable that I had to replace it at some point. It was also lacking a bit of calculating power for my modest editing needs - so I’m not too sad to finally replace it with actually capable hardware.

But.

A PC isn’t replaced in an afternoon.

It takes a couple of weeks.

So I had to get the project files off of my old PC (which is incredibly tedious if you don’t have an incredibly well organized file structures (which, as you already guessed - I obviously don't have)) and then I needed to cut the video on my wife’s laptop.

And my wife's laptop is a slightly sophisticated potato.

The entire fourth and fifth chapter of the video were edited on this hard calculating root vegetable - an experience I do not wish to repeat!

This delayed the video a couple of days and is also the reason why the editing in the second half lacks a bit of its usual sharpness - though I doubt many people even noticed.

Awesome.

And with this it is already time for our recurring patreon post tradition of making entirely new plans for the next couple of videos!

So please make sure to sit down because the next announcement might be so surprising it may otherwise knock you off your feet.
Because.

To everyone's surprise … the next video will actually be one of the videos I planned to do!

The next video will be about Paper Mario: “The Thousand Year Door”.

If everything goes as planned Celeste is next and afterwards we will hopefully discuss Echoes of Wisdom.

The Legend Of Zelda: “Echoes of Wisdom” is a game I was very much not expecting.

At this point I was honestly thinking that Nintendo is done with high profile switch releases and focusing all their efforts on the switch successor - but that is obviously not the case!

What little they have shown of the game so far looked incredibly intriguing and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

I plan to do a video on it directly after launch.

Maybe I end up doing a video about the new Mario and Luigi as well (depends a bit if the game ends up being really good (or really bad in an interesting way!)).

Finally, I had a couple of people ask me recently if I had any plans to do any Mario related content anytime soon and if I plan to do something over on the Gaming channel.

The answer is yes.

My current plan is to wait for Nintendo to finally reveal the switch successor.

Whatever console succeeds the switch, it will almost certainly launch with a new 3D Mario game.

My plan is to do a trailer analysis (like we did for Mario Wonder) for the new 3D Mario game - whatever it ends up being - and afterwards to do a retrospective on all 3D Mario games - starting with Odyssey.

It just makes a lot of sense to revisit the Mario games while the hype for a new one is building.

Hooray!

The next video might take a bit longer than usual, because TTYD is a really beefy game, I’m on vacation for a couple of days while producing it and switching over to a new PC probably slows me down a bit until everything has settled - but it shouldn’t be a terribly long wait.

Finally - a gigantic and huge thank you to everyone around here.

The Subnautica video sadly ended up getting completely buried by the algorithm and I honestly wouldn’t know what to do were it not for your generous support.

A fuzzyfull thank you for this!

Maybe it's the other way around - the Twilight Realm was originally just meant to be another dimension, but one of the writers they brought in to punch up the script came up with the idea that it's the afterlife. And maybe there wasn't much buy-in from Aonuma and/or others so they were told that it's an interesting idea but they should keep it vague so as to not literally say Link is going to turn into a weird purple creature after he dies.

I have sadly no idea! It's all really speculative and hard to tell what really happened from the outside, but my best guess is that something like that happened, for whatever reason!

Totk is generally thought to be in a similar boat, so it seems like the next console really will be a 'switch 2,' in that it isn't a different platform, just a more powerful device.

I am currently watching the Twilight Princess video and I really love it, it definitely had the Ceave charm and it seems like the algorithm likes the video as well. I'm very excited for the TTYD video, I finished it the other day and it's easily one of my favorite games of all time so I'm very interested to hear what you have to say about it.

I just finished your Twilight Princess video and as always I really enjoyed it. I just got a new job so I'm able to support you and I'm quite happy about that :) Looking forward to your TTYD video!

let us reminisce on the memories we've made with our trusty PCs over the years. They will never be forgotten. Echoes of Wisdom came as a surprise to everyone, I'd wager. I already got Tears of the Kingdom flashbacks from the glimpse into its echo selection menu, despite never having played TotK and only having watched your retrospective, but the gameplay looks extremely fun and innovative for a Zelda title. I'll be looking forward to both of our experiences.

The Twilight Princess video was really interesting, lots of food for thought. But there's something about the thesis that I don't understand. If I understand you correctly you're hypothesizing that Aonuma wanted to make the Twilight Realm into the afterlife and it was edited out. But why? Why would a good idea like that be edited out when it could be kept in with just a few lines of exposition and would immediately make the rest of the story more intriguing?

It's why I've always just lived with the flaws in my current PC, despite me even buying extended warranty back then. Aside from the hurdle of sending the entire thing back to the seller, I alyways thought to myself "what are the chances they can even figure out what the problem is, with the crashes just occuring randomly - chances are the next PC I get will just be even more broken than this".

I seriously hope I have better luck with mine! Replacing PC’s always feels like playing russian roulette - I hope you get yours soon to work!

"At this point I was honestly thinking that Nintendo is done with high profile switch releases and focusing all their efforts on the switch successor - but that is obviously not the case!" I have a theory that the reason the TTYD remake is locked at 30 FPS on Switch was that it was originally intended to be a launch title for the Switch successor, but the switch successor got delayed and they had to backport it to the Switch.

Already finished the Twilight Princess video yesterday and left a lengthy comment under it. TL;DR: I ended up somewhat disagreeing with some points you brought up (regarding development details and sales numbers), but as always, it was a really interesting and entertaining watch and did contain some new perspectives! Golly, I can relate to the PC troubles so hard. Let me share a little story with you. Roughly two-ish months ago, one of my HDDs "suddenly" decided to die (it wasn't actually that sudden - the thing had been in use for literally over ten years by that point and already made noises for years). Because WD Backup (Western Digital's own file backup software) turns out to be a big pile of poo poo that constantly lies to you, I ended up losing a notable amount of data (though that's a story of its own). Anyways, with some components of my current PC starting to die and the entire thing already being nearly ten years old, I decided to finally order a new one. I did so roughly a month ago. The shop where I ordered it listed two of my components with an estimated delivery time of "5 to 10 business days", everything else was in stock. Not too big of a deal, I thought. Three weeks later, and the PC still hadn't been shipped. I grew progressively more impatient. Contacting the shop, they suddenly named an expected delivery date of July 15, all just because of a single component (the water cooler). I asked if I could simply cancel that one component, which thankfully I could. Ordered the component from a different shop (which shipped it that exact same day). The PC itself was then shipped on the next day. Roughly two days later, all the components finally arrived at my house, and that's the end of the story. Except it isn't, the story still continues. You see, when I finally got all the components for my new PC, I was of course very eager to build the thing. Every PC I build always feels slightly different from the one I built before it, meaning I always get stuck on some of the details, trying to figure out what the manual is trying to say. Because of that, this PC took me roughly two days to build. When I was finally done with it, I wasn't too happy to discover that the darn thing just didn't work. The motherboard always turned on (without any video signal), got stuck on a specific error code (thankfully modern motherboards include a built-in LED for displaying those), and turned off again. I checked just about every connection and cable I could find multiple times, without it changing anything. Disassembled the entire thing and only left a few minimal components in (CPU and RAM), but again, same error. Along the way, I did actually get the motherboard to get past this error code twice, but only to run into it again on the very next boot. Frustrated, I concluded that there must be a fault with the motherboard and initiated an RMA for it. Now I'm sitting here, still waiting for my return to arrive at the shop (thanks, Hermes!) so that they can finally send me my replacement. And the worst part is that I'm not even 100% confident it's actually the motherboard that's faulty. It could just as well be the PSU, CPU or RAM. So yeah, it seems like PCs are simply cursed and were created by the devil for the sole purpose of reminding us how powerless we truely are in this life. Here's hope that my next attempt will actually work! I have plans to try a Linux OS on it for the first time in my life. We'll see how that goes!

Keep up the great work!

The Twilight Princess video was indeed fantastic- Wonderfully paced, and still had a Ceave charm that was really nice to see. I hope you enjoy your holiday, and that your new PC doesn't cause you too much technological backpain
